People are questioning if Taichi is just showy boxing without practical use
Organisers defend Taichi, calling it an important part of modern boxing

A video of a Taichi expert getting knocked out by a kickboxer with one blow has ignited debate on the value and practicality of the popular Chinese martial art.

Zhu Chunping, a 47-year-old Taichi teacher who has practised the style all his life, was defeated within five seconds by Yao Hantian, a 22-year-old amateur kickboxer.

Footage of the short fight has led some people to question if Taichi is just showy boxing without practical use; and if the traditional martial art could survive modern-day combat.

The controversial game took place last Saturday in front of 1,500 spectators during a combat championship in Suzhou, eastern China.

The championship consisted of nine games, including seven kick boxing games, one mixed martial arts game and one cross-disciplinary game between Taichi and kickboxing.

Mr Zhu, who stands 5ft8in and weighs 165 pounds, is an expert in Taichi as well as all kinds of traditional weapons, such as swords and sticks, according to the organisers.

His younger opponent Mr Yao, who stands 5ft9in and weighs 159 pounds, has practised kickboxing for about six months.

The kickboxer's coach has defended Taichi, saying it's an important part of modern boxing

Shanghai-based Shengshi Yinghao Club, the organiser of the championship, told MailOnline that they organised the Taichi-versus-kickboxing game because they wanted to find out which style would be better suited for combating.

The contestants and organisers are friends, therefore the game was set up with the purpose of mutual improvement not an occasion for either party to show off, said director of the Shengshi Yinghao Club Li Yong.

Mr Li, who is also the coach of Mr Yao, said the organisers had not expected the duel to finish so fast. He said doctors had to rush onto the stage to check on Mr Zhu before many spectators realised what had happened.

'Upon examination, Master Zhu was fine. He recovered for one minute then walked down the ring by himself,' said Mr Li.

More than 250 million people practise Taichi boxing worldwide, Chinese media claim

Taichi is one of the most popular sports and a form of intangible cultural heritage in China.

Legend has it that the sport was invented in the 17th century in the Chengjiagou village in central China by resident Chen Wangting. Chen created the style based on the martial arts techniques passed down by his family, it is said.

Known for its slow pace and elegance poses, Taichi is loved by people across China who can be seen pracisting it in parks in the morning and evening.

Figures released by Chinese state media claim there are more than 250 million people practising Taichi worldwide

The five-second fighthas drawn controversy to the historic Chinese boxing style.

On Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter, one net user claimed that Taichi's benefits were all in the appearance. ==>Cuman Gaya waaaa!!!! emoticon-Ngakak (S)

The user wrote: 'The traditional showy martial art could work while being taught to elderly people in the park as morning exercise, but it is asking for trouble to bring it into the ring. Five seconds, it was done.'

Another user joked that the Taichi expert lost because 'his rival did not fight according to the (Taichi) routine'.

Mr Li, the kickboxing coach, comes to Taichi's defence.

Commenting on the Chinese sport, Mr Li said: 'Taichi can improve one's health and temperament and has a lot of philosophy of martial arts in it.

'A lot of the kickboxing techniques come from Taichi, such as shoulder roll and the way you use your strength while kicking. It is an important part of modern boxing.'

However, Mr Li said that Taichi was not suitable for fighting off rivals in modern combating.

He also pointed out that Chinese martial arts were extremely sophisticated and profound, but many modern martial arts masters did not know how to best convey the arts.

'All they do is boasting that they could fight, which leads to the opposition between modern boxing and those "fake" kung fu masters.'

'Chinese kung fu is great, but it has been used in the wrong place by people with their own agenda.'

This is not the first time the essence of Taichi has been challenged.

Last May, a self-proclaimed Tai Chi master Wei Lei was taken down by out-spoken MMA coach Xu Xiaodong in less than 10 seconds during a high-profile game, causing waves of discussion as to which style was more superior.
