HBO blocked in China after John Oliver's 'Winnie the Pooh' jabs at leader Xi Jinping

China is oh so bothered by John Oliver’s Winnie the Pooh insults against its leader that it has blocked his whole channel.
HBO.com has been completely restricted for Chinese internet users after Oliver recently devoted a segment to the People’s Republic on his HBO show “Last Week Tonight,” according to monitor Greatfire.org.

Oliver touched on China’s global economic expansion project One Belt One Road, though he spent a large portion focused on the pants-less bear to whom Chinese President Xi Jinping has been compared.

The host said that Xi “is very sensitive about his perceived resemblance to Winnie the Pooh” before repeatedly referencing the children’s book character while talking about China’s krackdown on human rights.

Greatfire said that tests on Saturday and Sunday confirmed the site was blocked.

Oliver’s name was previously reported to have been censored from Chinese social media sites such as Weibo, with users blocked from uploading posts that mentioned his name.

Other Winnie the Pooh mentions have also been censored in China in recent years, with memes of the bear targeted earlier this year as social media users reacted to the removal of term limits for Xi.

Other websites that have previously been blocked by the so-called “Great Firewall of China” include Facebook, Twitter and The New York Times.
