China is intent on developing a new generation of military technologies that will surpass those of the United States and change the nature of warfare to China’s advantage, according to a recently released report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service's (CSIS's) Academic Outreach (AO) programme.

Entitled ‘China and the Age of Strategic Rivalry’, the document, which is based on the results of a workshop hosted in March by the AO programme, stated that Beijing is pursuing a strategy of innovation-driven development to bring about its economic transformation and military modernisation, with the latter focusing not only on the absorption of Western technology, but also on advances being made locally in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), unmanned weapons systems, directed-energy weapons, and quantum computing.
