Hail Satan, Hail Yourself: Why Satanism Makes More Sense Than You Think
Jun 26, 2017 By Laura Kelley
What is Satanism, exactly? Is it committing human sacrifices to Satan and painting 666 on the wall in human blood? Is it selling your soul to pass your quantum physics final? Not exactly. Satanism is a lot more logical than you might think. Individualism, freedom of thought, critical thinking, the exploration of sexuality—read on and you might be interested in doing as thou wilt.
Mr. Crowley. Credited with coining the phrase "do as thou wilt," Aleister Crowley is also responsible for many of the negative, gruesome stereotypes associated with Satanism. Crowley engaged in practices which were, to put it kindly, unethical at the very least. He was dubbed "the wickedest man in the world" for a reason. Crowley authored the highly controversial and infamous book The Book of the Law.
Anton LaVey. Anton LaVey completely revolutionized the face and ideals of Satanism. LaVey founded the Satanic Temple, also known as the Church of Satan. LaVey emphasized embracing seven essential tenets, mostly focusing on freedom of thought and the pursuit of truth.
Acceptance. Despite stereotypes and stigmas, the Satanic Temple promotes compassion. Empathy toward others is an important value, as are logic and reason. Not surprisingly, Satanists are LGBT-friendly and extremely accepting.
Acceptance of Imperfection. According to Satanism, humans are imperfect. We are allowed to make mistakes. If you make a mistake, the important part is doing what you can to make things right and learn from what you did wrong. The pursuit of truth and knowledge is of the utmost importance.
Truth. To Satanists, knowledge and truth are of the utmost importance and must be respected above all else. Nothing is a more effective teaching tool than human experience. Science, logic, progress, and justice must be respected.
More Christian Than Christianity? In Satanism, no ill will is to be harbored against practitioners of other religions. Everyone's free will and beliefs are to be recognized and respected. Rather than proving that Satanism is right and Judeo-Christianity is wrong, Satanists devote themselves to constantly learning and pursuing truth.
Baphomet. One of the tenets of the Church of Satan is that all actions should be noble and good. Causing harm to others should never be a person's intent. Compassion and reason are among the guiding principles of Satanism. Violence and political rhetoric have no place in the realm of ethical Satanists.
No Heaven, No Hell. Many are surprised to learn that Satanists do not worship the devil. Satanists do not believe in God, nor do they recognize the existence of the devil. True Satanists are atheists. Deities are considered to be human constructs.
Universal Indifference. Satanists essentially believe that the universe is indifferent to us. As such, there are no external forces working either for or against us. We are therefore responsible for taking control of our own lives as individuals. We need to foster and pursue our own personal best. Satanists strive to be the best possible version of themselves for the individual and greater good.
The Satanic Panic. The Satanic Panic of the '80s and '90s spread many of the misconceptions that Satanists are responsible for deaths, sexual abuse, bestiality, and other reprehensible activities. The idea that Satanic cults were gripping the nation was widespread.
West Memphis Three. The case of the West Memphis Three hinges on Satanism. Damien Echols, accused of being the ringleader, was believed to be a Satanist. Evidence used against him included the music he listened to and even sketches in his school notebooks. Damien was targeted as a scapegoat for being different.
Antichrist Superstar. Some musicians have been asked to accept some accountability for the actions of their fans. Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, and Black Sabbath are among some of the groups accused of playing a role, if not encouraging things that have been done in Satan's name. The impact that this stigma has on artistic creativity is undeniable.
Fire and Brimstone. Satanism encourages critical thinking among youth. Young people who are interested in the Church of Satan are encouraged to question their reality, form their own opinions, and when appropriate, agree to disagree. However, the Church of Satan encourages its followers to always be respectful of others and focus on introspection and self-discovery.
Bohemian Grove. Other misconceptions are that Satanists and the Illuminati are one and the same. Bohemian Grove, the club shrouded in secrecy whose members are among America's elite, also has nothing to do with Satanism. Additionally, there is no connection between Satanists and the freemasons. Satanism and occultism are often conflated.
Immortal Souls. Satanists do not sell their souls. To reiterate, Satanists do not recognize the existence of the devil, nor do they believe in heaven or hell. Satanists believe that if a person wants something, he or she must work for it.
