[E3 2013] Final Fantasy Versus XIII is Now Final Fantasy XV
LOS ANGELES — It appears that Final Fantasy Versus XIII, the long-in-development spinoff of the RPG series for PlayStation 3, has been rebranded Final Fantasy XV. And it seems like it’s headed to PlayStation 4.
Square Enix producer Tetsuya Nomura appeared in a video message to say that while there was not enough time to give too many details about the game, we would learn more in the coming days. Then he showed a trailer that was labeled Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but at the end of the trailer the logo shattered and was redrawn as Final Fantasy XV.
If Sony announced a platform for the game, I didn’t catch it in the presentation. But it did come in the middle of the PlayStation 4 section of the show, so it would seem as if the platform has shifted from PS3 to PS4.
Square Enix originally announced Final Fantasy Versus XIII way back at E3 2006, and it has been in development hell since then.
The company also announced a long-awaited sequel for its fans, Kingdom Hearts III, the Final Fantasy and Disney RPG mashup.
Sony also added that Final Fantasy XIV, the MMORPG released in 2010 that is about to be completely relaunched from scratch, will appear on PlayStation 3 and 4 (and no other consoles).
During the Sony E3 conference today, Square Enix once again revealed Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which has been re-branded as Final Fantasy XV.
Presumably built on Square Enix's next-gen Luminous engine, the game is "coming to PS4," but no exclusivity was mentioned.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII was first announced in 2006, but Square Enix has been mostly silent about the title recently, aside from confirming that it wasn't canceled.
Today's announcement confirms news from February that the title is shifting to next-gen and follows up on Square Enix's promise at the PlayStation 4 reveal conference that a new title would be unveiled at E3.
