U.S. government has not respected Native Americans
There’s a poster on the wall, but the picture is faded. All it says is “Why US?”
This poster is a faded picture of the Native American and just how their culture has almost been removed from history by the government.
Gathering data for this letter has been difficult as records back then lacked a lot. Censuses were taken, but no reference to the Native American heritage was noted, so they became estimates.
Before Columbus arrived the estimates were that between 2 million and 18 million were living in the Americas. Today, the current population is around 5.2 million in North America, many of whom are now living on reservations set up by the federal government.
You ask what happened to them — diseases, soldiers killing complete tribes, settlers killing them for their land, then they were forced by the government to live on reservations. And still there are over 562 tribes of Native Americans today.
Reports show this is where Hitler got his idea for his concentration camps — the reservations!
Estimates state that from 1776 to the 1890s, 500,000 to 1 million were killed. Did you know that 25,000 of them served in the U.S. military? This may come as a surprise, but the federal government violated at least 400 treaties with them.
In 1887, they had 154 million acres of land; now they have 48 million acres. They lost another 400,000 acres for Japanese internees and gun ranges.
Then came the Spanish after gold and slave trading, while managing to murder another 600,000 to 700,000 natives. And yet they live today.

How did the government feel toward them? George Washington reportedly advocated for “the total destruction and devastation of their settlements.” When the Continental Army invaded, the Haudenosaunee decided not to risk the loss of life and evacuated the land.
