Penempatan Marinir Amerika Meningkat Drastis di Darwin, Australia
Record US Marine deployment destined for Darwin

A record number of US Marines will be deployed to Darwin, with the first cohort expected within weeks, to take part in joint operations with Australian Defence Force personnel.

Defence Minister Marise Payne will today confirm 1587 US Marines, eight MV-22 Osprey aircraft and six M777 Howitzers will take part in this year’s Marine Rotational Force in northern Australia.

The US deployment, which falls short of Barack Obama’s original pledge of 2500 troops, is the seventh and largest rotation since 2012, up from 1250 last year.

The initial agreement negotiated by Mr Obama and former prime minister Julia Gillard in 2011, was aimed at using the Northern Territory as part of a new “pivot in Asia”.

The ADF, in addition to training with US Marines, will also hold air-training exercises with US Air Force personnel.

Senator Payne said the first official contingent of this year’s Marine Rotational Force would arrive this month, and welcomed the increase in numbers.

A small advance party has been on the ground assisting with the clean-up following Cyclone Marcus.

“These initiatives strengthen the ability of Australia and the US to work together, and with regional partners, in the interests of regional stability and security,” Senator Payne said. “During major exercises the rotation will include additional equipment and assets such as AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters, UH-1Y Venom helicopters, F/A-18 Hornet aircraft and MC-130 Hercules aircraft.”

The US Marines will train with defence personnel from the ADF, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, The Philippines, Singapore and Thailand over six months.

Senator Payne said there would be 15 training activities.

“Australia and the US have a long-standing history of working together to promote peace, security and stability across the globe,” she said.

“Australia welcomes opportunities to work with the United States to foster greater co-operation with our regional partners.”

The ADF will also work with the US Air Force and regional partners as part of the Enhanced Air Co-operation Initiative.

The expansion of air force exercises will include aeromedical evacuation training missions, fifth-generation fighter integration, combat-mobility activities with the US Marine Corps, integrated aircraft maintenance and “expanding air-to-air refuelling capabilities”.

Senator Payne said the air co-operation initiative would help increase the “ability of Australia and the US to deploy into the region where and when they are required to do so”.

Senator Payne last year confirmed that the long-running dispute involving $2 billion in training infrastructure and running costs over 25 years between the US and Australian defence departments had been settled.

In 2016, it was revealed a $30m cash dispute between the US and Australia had hindered the original deal.
