‘US shouldn’t use North Korea’s actions as an excuse’: China, Russia raise concerns over US missile defence plans

China and Russia joined hands again on Friday and warned that a US plan to deploy a missile defence system in South Korea would “damage the strategic balance” in the region.
“The US should not use Pyongyang’s actions as an excuse to increase their military presence in the region,” said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a joint press conference with his Chinese counterpart in Beijing.
“Both of us are gravely concerned,” Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told reporters.
The US and South Korea have reportedly started formal consultations on the possibility of deploying the Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) missile system on the peninsula following North Korea’s renewed nuclear and rocket tests earlier this year.
The US said the THAAD system, capable of intercepting ballistic missiles in the terminal phase, was a “defensive measure” against provocations by North Korea.
But some military experts said the powerful radar would have a detection range that covered part of China and Russia, if it was stationed on the peninsula.
Wang said the installation of the THAAD would exceed defensive needs and have a “direct impact” on the strategic security of both China and Russia.
“Relevant countries should respect the legitimate concerns of China and Russia,” Wang said.
The Korean peninsula was at a time of “high risk”, he said, calling for a full implementation of UN sanction against the North to prevent Pyongyang’s further development of its nuclear and missile programmes, while asking all parties to exercise restraint.
The ministers urged the resumption of the long-ceased six-party talks, which involved the two Koreas, China, Russia, Japan and the US.
Lavrov is in Beijing to prepare for Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to China in June. On the South China issue, Lavrov again endorsed Beijing’s position, saying the issue should not be “internationalised” nor interfered with by outside players.
In another sign that the two countries are cosying up, the two defence ministers said in Moscow on Wednesday their countries would increase military exercises to strengthen security and defence cooperation.

China, Russia rap US missile defense plan in SKorea

BEIJING: China and Russia on Friday rapped US plans to put a missile defense system on the Korean peninsula, less than 24 hours after Pyongyang twice tested projectiles thought to be capable of reaching American territory.
A series of missile tests and nuclear blasts by North Korea have pushed Seoul into talks with Washington about deploying the US’s sophisticated Theater High Altitude Area Defense System (THAAD), which fires projectiles to smash into enemy missiles.
