Trump orders missile strike on Syria after chemical weapon attack on civilians



Donald Trump has ordered the firing of 50 cruise missiles at targets in Syria – a retaliatory blow for the President Bashar al-Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons on civilians.

Reports said that the missiles, fired from from two US Navy vessels in the Mediterranean Sea and their targets included Shayrat air base in the central city of Homs from which the Syrian aircraft staged Tuesday’s chemical weapons attack, which killed up to 100 people.

Mr Trump had been weighing up the option of a military response to Mr Assad’s alleged use of chemical weapons on civilians in Idlib province.

The president had spoken in the Rose Garden of the White House about how the images he had seen of dead children had changed his opinion on Mr Assad.

While on route to Florida to meet with the Chinese president, he was asked his thoughts on Mr Assad and he said “something should happen”.

BREAKING: Donald Trump launches 60 CRUISE MISSILES against Syria despite Russian threats


Tomahawks were launched from the Mediterranean sea
THE US has rained down more than 60 Tomahawk missiles on a Syrian airfield in a show of power against Bashar al-Assad.

The missiles were launched from US Navy destroyers in the mediterranean sea – the first use of Tomahwaks by the US since November last year.

The strike was launched at 8:45 p.m. ET, targeting the airfield's hangers, aircraft, runways, and fuel storage areas

Trump’s action in the region within in his first 77 days as Commander in Chief is a stronger display of force than former President Barack Obama used over his 8 year term.

On Wednesday Mr Trump claimed his view of how to handle the Syrian crisis changed when he saw the impact of the 'heinous' chemical attack on small children.

He said: “Yesterday's chemical attack, a chemical attack that was so horrific in Syria against innocent people, including women, small children and even beautiful little babies – their deaths were an affront to humanity.”

It comes just moments after Russia warned the United States to avoid launching strikes against President Assad’s regime or they could face “consequences”.

In response to a question on whether President Donald Trump may launch attacks in Syria, Russia’s deputy UN envoy Vladimir Safronkov said: “Think about negative consequences”.

He added: "We have to think about negative consequences, negative consequences, and all the responsibility if military action occurred will be on shoulders of those who initiated such doubtful and tragic enterprise."

Update from Syrian airbase targeted by US missiles



BEIRUT, LEBANON (6:25 A.M.) – The U.S. Navy fired more than 50 tomahawk cruise missiles at the Shayrat Airbase this morning, causing significant damage to this military installation in the eastern countryside of the Homs Governorate.

What we know so far:

U.S. missiles struck Shayrat’s airfields, aircraft hangar, and fuel tankers
Destroyed fuel tankers caused several explosions and a large fire that has not been put out yet
At least 15 fighter jets have been damaged or destroyed
One fighter pilot was killed – several others wounded
Russians were present at the airbase when it was attacked

Update: there are now reports of four deaths.
