Jakarta's Governor is a suspect in a blasphemy case with the matter to now proceed to court, the city's police have announced.

The allegations that Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, or Ahok as he is widely known, insulted the Koran were at the centre of a violent protest in Jakarta earlier this month.

The violent events forced President Joko Widodo to postpone his visit to Australia.

Ahok has been ordered not to leave the country.

The Governor, who is Christian and ethnic Chinese, is running for election at a poll due next year and accuses his opponents of being politically motivated.

The charge of blasphemy carries a maximum five years in prison.

Ahok has expressed his desire to appear in court to clear himself of the charges and to one day be elected as the first Christian president of majority Muslim Indonesia.

In an exclusive interview with the ABC's 7.30, Ahok accused his critics of corruption and said the mass protest of hardline Muslims on November 4 was politically motivated, with protestors receiving 500,000 Rupiah to attend.

"I need to go to the court to prove this is political and not the law," he told 7.30.

But the Governor would not elaborate on who he thought was funding the unrest.

"I don't know, we don't know, but I believe the President knows from the intelligence, I believe they know," he said.

"It is not easy, you send more than 100,000 people, most of them, if you look at the news, they said they got the money, 500,000 Rupiah."

The violent November 4 protests were at the centre of allegations that the Governor was guilty of blasphemy after using the Koran to question his critics.

Some Muslims say verse 51 of the holy book states Muslims must not vote for a non-Muslim.

"I believe I am not guilty, that's why I prefer to bring it to the court, everyone will see the evidence," Ahok said.

"I believe this is the status quo, the corrupters strike back at me because I cut too much corruption in this city."

Ahok is popular among moderate Muslims in the sprawling Indonesian capital and is known for his anti-corruption stance, for ridding the city of many slums and trying to tackle the deep infrastructure flaws of the chaotic capital.

Abu Jibril, the leader of Majelis Mujahidin, a radical Islamic group which played a key role in the protest, said Ahok should be sued over his comments that protesters were paid.

"God said that infidels are liars, infidels are hypocrites and liars. If Ahok really said that he can be sued," Mr Jibril said.
