Nicaragua has acquired 50 T-72B tanks from the Russian Federation in a deal worth USD80 million. According to Congressman Edwin Castro, the tanks will be used to combat drug trafficking.
Moscow has announced that a first batch of 20 tanks has been shipped to the Central American nation. However, its arrival date is unclear.
On 3 May the Nicaraguan National Assembly authorised foreign military personnel to enter the country in the second half of 2016. This includes Russian personnel that will train the Nicaraguan Army on its new platforms.
Russia and Nicaragua have enjoyed close relations since Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega returned to power in 2007.
