The death toll in a crush of people at the annual haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia has risen to 150, the country's civil defense said on its Twitter account.

The report said the number of people injured in the incident outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca stood at 400.

At least 310 people were killed and hundreds injured in a stampede outside the Muslim holy city of Mecca on Thursday, Saudi Arabian officials said.

Saudi Arabia’s civil defense directorate said on Twitter that medical teams were continuing to sort through fatalities and injuries from the crush in Mina, on the outskirts of Mecca.

More than 220 rescue vehicles and ambulances — along with 4,000 pilgrims — were helping respond to the incident, it said, advising pilgrims to take alternative routes.

The annual Hajj pilgrimage — which began on Tuesday — attracts around 2 million Muslims to Mecca.
