About 26,000 are being treated to a preview of Singapore's National Day Parade at the Padang on Saturday (Aug 1). The show promises to be extra special, as it also marks the nation's 50th birthday.
The Padang is where Singapore's first National Day Parade was held in 1966 and many more after that in the 1960s and 1970s. The event is back at the venue this year to commemorate Singapore's Golden Jubilee, with the addition of several special segments.

Some of the highlights at this year's parade include crowd favourites like the Red Lions and the aerial flypast. But for the first time, the F-16 pilots will form a number 50 in the sky to commemorate Singapore's 50th birthday. Also for the first time, a jumbo A380 Singapore Airlines aircraft will participate in the flypast. In addition, there will be a tribute aerial flypast for the late founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew - a salute executed to signify Singapore's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.

Another unique segment is the vintage march past. This involves about 450 participants representing different sectors that contributed to the early growth of the nation, including the Armed Forces and the Singapore Police Force. The participants all don uniforms of the past, such as the characteristic khaki police shorts.
