LAAD 2015: Russian Bazalt allowed to export APS-defeating RPG-30

The RPG-30 disposable anti-tank rocket launcher, developed by Russia's Bazalt, was marketed for export for the first time at the LAAD 2015 exhibition, held in Rio de Janeiro from 14-17 April.

"Only on the eve of the exhibition did we gain the export licence for this new item," Bazalt deputy director general Alexander Ilyin told IHS Jane's . "Now we are allowed to offer it on the global arms market."

Bazalt developed the RPG-30 as a two-part rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) launcher specifically to defeat vehicles fitted with active protection systems (APSs). The system is 1,135 mm long, weighs 10.3 kg and comprises a large-diameter tube containing a 105 mm PG-30 tandem anti-tank shaped-charge grenade, below which is a smaller-diameter container that fires a 42 mm decoy rocket to activate the APS ahead of the main charge.

As Ilyin pointed out, all known APSs share a common principle that involves a radar detecting the approaching anti-tank munition and then a counter-charge being fired into its path, the explosion of which disrupts the incoming round. Such systems, however, also have common disadvantages, the most substantial of which is their reaction time. This factor was taken into account when RPG-30 was developed.

According to Bazalt, the reaction time of all known APSs range from 0.2-0.4 seconds before they can adjust to counter a second threat, opening a window of opportunity for the PG-30 - following the decoy's trajectory by a fraction of a second - to penetrate the vehicle's defences.

The PG-30 round can penetrate explosive reactive armour packages plus more than 600 mm of rolled homogenous armour, more than 1.5 m of reinforced concrete or more than 2 m of brick.

The RPG-30's sight shooting range is 200 m, with the range of a direct shot at a target 2 m high being 150 m.
