Pakistani Christians burned a French flag during a protest in the north-western city of Peshawar on Sunday, decrying the depiction of the Prophet Muhammad in the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.
Organised by the Pakistan United Christian Movement, Bishop Humphry Sarfaraz of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province led the protest from All Saints Church in Kohati bazar through the centre of the city. Demonstrators carried Christian crosses, chanting slogans including “We condemn the blasphemous cartoons of Prophet Muhammad” until peacefully dispersing at Peshawar Press Club.
An estimated 2.5 million Christians reside in Pakistan, making up 1.6 percent of the population.
