SHAH ALAM: The AV8 is scheduled to be officially inducted into the Army in a ceremony at the DRB Hicom plant in Pekan this Saturday.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak is expected to hand over 12 AV8s to Army Chief Jen Tan Sri Raja Mohamed Affandi Raja Mohamed Nor to mark the official induction of the 8X8 into the service.
All the AV8s to be handed over are the first batch to be manufactured locally at the plant from the 245 contracted to Deftech, the DRB Hicom defence arm. The other 12 – the so-called test pattern vehicles – were built completely in Turkey by FNSS.
Reportedly, the first unit to operate the AV8 will be the Army’s most decorated mechanised battalion, 19th Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment.
The Malaysian Tigers as the 19th is known, stood up in 1977 as regular infantry unit. In 1987. it became the Army’s first Mechanised Infantry battalion.
It first started with the Commando V150 and before transitioning into the Radpanzer Condor 4X4 in 1989. In 2003, the Malaysian Tigers started operating the KIFVs but two years later returned to the Condors under an Army restructuring programme.
It was with the Condors, that the 19th Battalion brought to Somalia where it took part in the infamous “Black Hawk Down” incident. Condor driver Private Mat Aznan bin Awang was killed in the firefight in the Bakara Market between 3 and 4 October, 1993.
Aznan, who was posthumously promoted to Corporal, was awarded the Seri Pahlawan Gagah Perkasa (SP), the country’s highest honour while six others involved in the incident were awarded the Panglima Gagah Berani (PGB) medals. They are Mej Abd Aziz Abd Latif, Kapt Mohd Halim Khalid, Lt Khairul Anuar Abd Aziz ,Lt M Muhamad Juraimy Ariffin, LKpl Sabri Ahmad and LKpl Rizal Ismail.
Six others were cited for the gallantry – Kepujian Perutusan Keberanian (KPK). They are Kpl Abd Manaf Mohamad, LKpl Abu Bakar Hassan, LKpl Sulaiman Abd Aziz, LKpl Rasdi Abdullah, LKpl Abdullah Din, LKpl Abd Aziz bin Bakaratullah and Pbt Norazam Baharom.
It is unknown whether personnel of the 19th will from now on used an AV8 badge on their uniform following the induction into service of the 8X8. Since 1989, the soldiers of the battalion had been wearing a badge featuring the Condor to mark its history as the Army’s first mechanised infantry battalion.
