[Haiya setelong wa] Cina menjunjung tinggi hukuman mati untuk terpidana teroris
A Chinese court has upheld the decision to impose the death penalty on three men convicted of terror acts.
Hasayn Muhammad, Iskandar Ehet and Turgun Tohtunyaz were convicted over a mass stabbing earlier this year in which 31 people in the Chinese city of Kunming died. Mr Muhammad had appealed to the high court for the death penalty to be dropped but his case was rejected by the higher people’s court of Yunnan province .
The three men were found guilty of “leading a terrorist group” that planned and carried out the attack at Kunming’s railway station (pictured) on 1 March 2014. A statement from the court said that, as well as upholding its sentence for these three, they would also be upholding the decision to sentence a pregnant woman to life in prison for her involvement in the incident.
The stabbings in the south-west region of the country have been called by state media “China’s 9/11”. More than 140 people were injured as a result of the terror attack, which were blamed on “separatists” acting in the province of Yunnan, where there is a broad mix of different cultures and religions living.
The next step in the judicial process is for the death sentences to be reviewed by China’s supreme court.
