Youth leader compares IDF soldiers to Nazis, causes outcry
Counselor asks students visiting Poland what the difference is between a Nazi who didn't refuse orders and an IDF soldier who doesn't refuse orders, says question is relevant in light of issues such as the "occupied territories" and the fighting in Gaza.

"What's the difference between a Nazi soldier who doesn't refuse to follow orders, and an Israeli soldier who doesn't refuse an order?" a counselor from the Farmers Union youth movement asked in a letter to a group of Israeli high school students on a school trip to Poland, setting off a controversy.

The students, from a school in central Israel, were participating in a group activity one evening when one student told his classmates that the counselor had asked that the letter be read out loud. The letter also asked, "What would I have done if I had been a Nazi officer who was asked to commit inhumane acts? These questions are especially relevant these days, in light of the issue of the occupied territories, the war with Hamas, the refugees coming to Israel from the Egyptian border, and more."

When the students returned to Israel, the students' parents were interviewed on the radio and complained about the counselor's letter. The school principal approached the students and asked for an explanation.

The youth movement issued a statement saying it is clarifying the event with the counselor, and that the comparison was a mistake the counselor should not have made. The statement also said the counselor's position did not reflect that of the movement, most of whose graduates serve in the Israel Defense Forces.

"The Farmers Union youth movement fully condemns the comparison made in the letter," the movement said in a statement.

"The comparison between soldiers in the IDF and Nazi soldiers is inappropriate. We do not support or teach insubordination. As a Zionist youth movement, we teach love for the country, Zionism, and responsibility toward Israeli society. All the movement's graduates serve in the IDF, including the most elite combat units."
