French mayor appeals to Hollande after car-burning leaves town 'looking like Beirut'

A mayor in northern France has made an impassioned appeal to François Hollande to krack down on a youths who he says are burning cars and making his town look like a war zone.

Disaffected youths on impoverished estates in France often torch cars but Gustave Dassonville, the mayor of Halluin, a small town near the Belgian border, says it has spiralled out of control.

“Fronts of houses blackened by flames, burnt-out car carcasses all over the place. You'd think you were in Beirut in the 1980s. And what is the state doing? Nothing!" Mr Dassonville fumed in an open letter to the president asking for police reinforcements.

“While you are playing policeman in Iraq and Syria, things are burning here at home, and that doesn't seem to bother you," he wrote.

The mayor said 17 cars had been destroyed by arson in the past two weeks. It is a sizeable number for a town of only 20,000 people but few by comparison with more than a thousand vehicles that were set ablaze across France on New Year’s Eve, when car-burning reaches a peak in what has become a much-deplored tradition.

The authorities have stopped releasing figures for each town or district after they realised that rival gangs from different areas were keeping an eye on them and trying to outdo each other.

Nearly nine thousand cars were torched during riots in the poor, mainly immigrant suburbs of French cities in 2005.
