Tetsuya Nakashima awalnya dipilih untuk mengarahkan film ini, yang diumukan ke publik pada tanggal 8 Desember 2011. Lokasi shooting live-action movie: Pulau Hashima di Nagasaki, yang lebih dikenal dengan sebutan Gunkanjima atau Pulau Kapal Perang. Pulau tersebut adalah lokasi bekas kota tambang yang sekarang sudah ditinggalkan dan menyisakan banyak bangunan tua yang tetap berdiri.
