The following year, the United States can begin testing a new unmanned aerial vehicle designed to perform a variety of transportation and other support tasks. The device is being developed by Lockheed Martin as part of the project ARES and should become the embodiment of the ideas that have emerged in the last few years. The exact timing of the beginning of the delivery of the new UAV troops are still unknown because testing and debugging new drone could be seriously delayed.

On plans for a quick test UAV prototype in February this year, the agency reported DARPA, who oversees the project. Then DARPA reminded about the project. According to the agency, the project ARES (Aerial Reconfigurable Embedded System - «Air Reconfigurable Embedded System") is designed to create a multi-vehicle unmanned aerial vehicle, which will have to solve various problems faced by the troops.

A little later, the agency DARPA has identified the prime contractor for the project: the development of ARES unit deals with the company Lockheed Martin.

In order to provide versatility UAV ARES is proposed to construct a modular scheme. The basis of the machine will be a platform equipped with a control system, power plant and fuel system. This platform will be attached to the target load modules. It is assumed that ARES can carry cargo module, for transportation of the wounded, a set of spy equipment, etc. Payload weight exceeding 3000 pounds (1360 kg).

The modular UAV ARES is a platform with the power plant, propellers and a set of equipment. Takeoff weight drone ARES should reach 7,000 pounds (3.17 tons). Using the engine capacity of 900 hp, the machine can reach speeds of up to 230 miles per hour and fly at a range of 250 miles. Due to the relatively small dimensions promising UAV can sit on a width of not more than 15-16 m. Equally important feature of the project is sufficiently high load ratio: payload up to 40% of the total weight of the machine.

It was supposed to be a light armored car with the possibility of "a flying unit." By its architecture the main platform UAV ARES much resembles the corresponding module of the previous project. Probably, after the analysis of opportunities and prospects, it was decided to abandon the flying cars and focus on building drones.

With regard to the proposed modular architecture of the payload, the use of a variety of containers, mounted on universal mount, really needs to provide greater flexibility of the new technology. During the development of the UAV ARES can get a number of new "special". Such a design perspective limited carrying capacity of the underlying platform.

Currently, the development of the project ARES coming to an end. In the coming months, DARPA and Lockheed Martin have to start building a prototype perspective UAV, which will then be used in the tests. The first test flights are planned for next year. Prospects of the project is not yet completely clear - it used some bold decisions that can complicate testing and further fine-tuning.
