The Yogyakarta General Elections Commission (KPUD) intends to reprimand the Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa campaign team over what it considers a violation of campaign regulations.
The letter corresponds to the Elections Supervisory Agency's (Bawaslu) conclusion that vice presidential candidate Hatta's presence at a mass prayer session at the University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (UMY) sport hall on June 26 constituted campaign activity, as reported by tribunnews.com.
According to Bawaslu Yogyakarta chairman Mohammad Najib, Hatta was proven to have campaigned during the mass prayer session, and this was in violation of Law No. 42/2008 on the presidential elections, in which campaigning on school campuses is prohibited.
Due to this, Najib said they had sent recommendations to the KPU to implement sanctions on the Yogyakarta branch of the Prabowo-Hatta campaign team.
"We must follow this up on Bawaslu's recommendation. The recommendation is on administrative violations and this is where the KPU comes in," KPU Yogyakarta chairman Hamdan Kurniawan said on Thursday.
Although the KPU Yogyakarta would send the letter immediately, they said the warning letter was the only sanction they were implementing to ensure such violations did not reoccur.
Bawaslu Yogyakarta commissioner Sri R. Werdiningsih said even though the Yogyakarta Prabowo-Hatta campaign team denied allegations of campaigning on campus, Bawaslu had proof in the form of a recording.
The recording depicted Hatta speaking about their mission statement while making a speech. Due to this, Bawaslu said it did not need to call Hatta to ask for clarification because sufficient proof had already been obtained.
However, Bawaslu has already called on National Mandate Party (PAN) chairman Amien Rais, who accompanied Hatta at UMY, for clarification, but he was conducting activities outside of Java. (fss)
