The Leading Global Thinkers: Joko Widodo!!!
JOKO WIDODO
For governing by hitting the streets.

Joko Widodo is a huge Metallica fan. The 52-year-old governor of Jakarta and likely presidential candidate was part of the fist-pumping audience at one of the band's recent concerts and likes to throw up devil horns during news conferences. But it's for other reasons that he really breaks the mold of Indonesian politics.
Unlike many of his moneyed peers, who hail from powerful political dynasties and have little contact with the common man, Joko clings to his humble beginnings. He was born poor and now makes a point of regularly walking his city's most impoverished neighborhoods, talking to citizens about their concerns. His biggest public projects—dredging a river to prevent flooding, for instance—are unglamorous but practical, and they've earned him the goodwill of his constituents. He has become so popular that his presence in public sometimes incites "jokowimania," in which he is swarmed by people hoping to touch him.
Before becoming governor in late 2012, Joko served as the mayor of Surakarta. Now, many expect that he will enter Indonesia's 2014 presidential race. An August poll showed that he is far more popular than other expected challengers, including former President Megawati Sukarnoputri, the leader of Joko's own political party.
Joko might be hard to beat if he runs, and there's hope that if he takes the presidency, he will repeat the good work he has done in his other jobs. "[He's] the only leader who can make me amazed," reads a testimonial that helped Joko place third this January in the World Mayor Prize, an international award handed out by the City Mayors Foundation, an urban-affairs think tank, "the only leader that when I remember him, I feel excited and have new hope."
