Brimstone Missile - MBDA.
MBDA Brimstone missiles family
May 26, 2014 Print
One of the most interesting projects of the international European consortium MBDA is a family of missiles Brimstone. Ammunition class "air-surface" weapons designed for aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles and differ from each other by various design features. For example, the missile Brimstone Dual Mode differs from the first family of Brimstone missiles used homing laser with passive and active radar channels. At the same time the company is experiencing another new MBDA missile - Brimstone 2.

In the early stages of development guided missile Brimstone («Sulphur") was seen as a modernized version of the U.S. missile AGM-114 Hellfire, developed taking into account the production in Europe. Nevertheless, the design requirements of the project and update the various components of ammunition led to what became an independent project Brimstone. We missiles AGM-114, previously considered basic, were adopted only some commonalities appearance.
The first rocket family, Brimstone, has a launch weight of 48.5 and the total length of 1.8 meters with a diameter of 17.8 cm casing head of the munition is transparent fairing homing laser and semi-active system. For homing in the housing located tandem shaped-charge warhead weighing 6.2 kg with impact fuze, and control equipment. The tail part of the body is occupied by the solid rocket motor. On the lateral surface of the rocket Brimstone are two groups of X-shaped stabilizers, in the middle and tail parts of the housing. Tailplane equipped with rudders for flight control. It should be noted that such an arrangement of units, as part of the onboard systems, was developed for the first missile Brimstone, but is used and its subsequent modifications. The main way to update and improve the ammunition was to replace some of the newer units with higher performance.
Brimstone missile control system made in accordance with the concept of "fire and forget". For this first model equipped with missile inertial navigation system to connect to the target area and semi-active laser homing. Application algorithm ammunition as follows: equipment on board the aircraft or helicopter, armed with missiles Brimstone, introduces the equipment munition data on the location goal. After starting out on their own rocket in a given area and includes a laser seeker. Further guidance is provided on the ground laser illuminated object.

Solid rocket motor allows Brimstone develop supersonic flight. Accurate information about the maximum speed of flight was not made public. When using rockets as weapons aircraft or unmanned aerial vehicle exceeds the maximum range of 20 kilometers. If the carrier munition is a helicopter, then this parameter is reduced to 12 km.
Brimstone missile development started in 1996 and lasted about three years. In August 1999, the first test launch of a ground launcher. About a year later was made the first test launch from the aircraft Tornado GR4. Lapping rockets continued over the next few years. In the middle of the two thousandth began mass production of new missiles, taken into service the Royal Air Force of Great Britain. Their first attack aircraft carriers became Tornado GR4.
Reported that the program is developing a new guided missile MBDA Brimstone cost to the customer in the face of the British military establishment about 370 million pounds (600 million dollars). The cost of one missile first version does not exceed 100 thousand pounds (about 150-160 thousand dollars).
The first combat use of Brimstone missiles took place in Iraq shortly after adopting. Munitions have been used to attack various stationary targets. Despite the fairly high performance, the new missile has received a number of complaints. First of all, the British military was not satisfied with laser guidance system that requires human intervention. Not in all cases it was possible to send fighters who could highlight goal laser.
In 2008, in accordance with the new requirements of the customer was created rocket Brimstone Dual-Mode. She kept all the basic units of ammunition base, but got a new dual-channel homing head. To find purpose and guiding her Brimstone Dual-Mode can be used as a passive laser system and active radar operating in the millimeter range. Development of a new rocket required additional investments and cost about 10 million pounds (16 million dollars).
An interesting feature of the project Brimstone Dual-Mode was the approach to the manufacture of missiles. Customer may purchase new missiles this model or special equipment packages by installing a missile base modifications which receives two-channel homing head. Such conversion of one munition customer costs about 35-40 thousand pounds (55-65 thousand dollars).
Guided missile Brimstone Dual-Mode was first used in combat in Afghanistan in 2009. In 2011, British aircraft actively using this ammunition during the operation in Libya. Only during the first month of combat aircraft UK spent about 60 missiles with dual-channel homing head and hit a few tens of stationary and moving targets. In this basic model rocket with semiactive laser homing used extremely limited. The first launch of the munition on a target in Libya took place only in September 2011. In total, during the Libyan operation, British military spent more than 200 missiles Brimstone two modifications.
Since 2012, a consortium MBDA is developing anti-ship ordnance Brimstone Sea Spear. According to reports, the missile base larger products and can carry a heavier warhead (100 kg). In addition, anti-ship missile has received a turbojet flies at subsonic speeds. Range was declared at 100 kilometers. It has been argued that the missile Brimstone Sea Spear have dual homing and control system using inertial and satellite navigation. The first test launch of the anti-ship missile family Brimstone was held in June 2012. Experimental missile successfully hit 6-foot inflatable boat. Completion of the project Brimstone Sea Spear is scheduled for 2014-15.
Last fall, MBDA conducted a series of test launches of new missiles Brimstone 2. This ammunition is a further development of the missile with dual-channel homing. The aim was to increase the modernization of the last firing range, as well as capacity building rocket attacks at moving objects. Thanks to the new rocket engine maximum range has been increased to 60 kilometers (40 miles when running from a helicopter). The missile is equipped with a new warhead greater power. Solid undergone refinements radar seeker, get active and passive channels. Now radar seeker is able to find and maintain speed and maneuvering ground targets, including a reduced radar signature. Preserved passive laser system.
During the tests on one of the polygons U.S. conducted last fall, without test rocket warhead launched on moving target vehicles. During one of the test starts, the target vehicle was moving at a speed of 110 km / h and was surrounded by other means of transport. All five prototype missiles successfully hit their targets with a direct hit. On the main part of the trajectory control of a rocket is passive laser system, then for guidance radar meet both channels, and worked on the final stretch, only the active radar seeker. Serial production of missiles Brimstone 2 should start in early 2015.
At the end of March 2014, there were reports on the completion of the next missile tests. At this time the ammunition carrier family Brimstone became UAV MQ-9 Reaper. Conditional purpose were moving cars target. Launches were made from a height of 20 thousand feet (6 km) and with a range of 7-12 km. All missiles successfully hit targets with a direct hit.
For use with missiles Brimstone, Brimstone Dual-Mode Brimstone and 2, a special launcher. This unit is mounted on a pylon of an aircraft carrier and allows to carry and apply three missiles. Because of this one strike aircraft able to carry quite a large number of rockets. Thus, the fighter-bomber Eurofighter Typhoon can be suspended six launchers with 18 missiles. Warload Tornado GR4 aircraft usually consists of 3 or 6 Brimstone missiles in combination with other types of ammunition.
First foreign operator Brimstone missiles became Saudi Arabia. Contract volume of about 10 million pounds (16 million dollars) was signed in 2011. According to some reports, the Saudi military chose British rocket, seeing its high efficiency when used during operations in Libya. Other countries are still negotiating and discussing the details of possible contracts. Interest in British missiles showed France and India. Also, Brimstone missiles in the near future can be replenished stockpiles USAF.

( Multi National Corp), dari mulai "A Mother Bomb" hingga kendaraan MRAP dsb-nya.
Mbok sekali-kali di uji coba di negara produsennya sendiri.
