Russia under fire Exploding shells started by a wild fire that generated
more explosions at a military depot in southern
Russia, injured about thirty people & initiated the
evacuation of over 6,000 from a nearby village,
investigators & emergency workers said. A few
hundred people were also evacuated from the hazard zone, according to a local law administration source. The Defense Ministry confirmed there were no
casualties & said the personnel of a military unit at the
Chapaevsk base stationed in the area, have been
timely evacuated. This is in conflict with reports
saying two soldiers and eight civilians were killed
when a truck caught fire. The incident is the latest in a string of fires &
explosions of munitions storage & disposal sites that
have plagued Russia over the past years. Critics of the
military attribute the persisting issue of exploding
army ammunition depots as the result of poor
oversight & lax safety standards. No cause has yet been determined for the fire at the
Chapaevsk military depot in the Samara region on
Wednesday. The federal specialists reported the
incident was set off by the "involuntary" explosion of
shells. Russian munitions, which dates back to the Soviet
period, have exploded several times in recent years &
the resulting fires usually linger for days. In October a
soldier caused a devastating fire at an ammunition
depot by dropping a cigarette butt. In other cases,
shells have exploded in the cause of munitions disposal. The emergencies ministry said about thirty people had
sought medical help & eleven of them were taken to
hospital, while over 6,000 people were evacuated from
the village of Nagorny. Over 600 emergency
workforces were trying to put out the fire..
