Yesterday, my school held an international seminar and I had a responsible to be the moderator. It was not an easy task. I was not only control the seminar but also did such kind of intepretation. English is a key to open access to the world. But, in my small city, it is not really popular. Not all people have intention to speak English, but in fact, they are really want to be accessible.

This seminar discussed about e commerce and e business. It was participated by teachers and student from some vocational schools in Ponorogo. The keynote speaker was Erno de Korte, PUM Netherlands senior expert. After the semknar he said that he really happy with the seminar. One of supporting detail was my intepretation. He said that I did it well. The audience seemed receive the message. And I could even made it simple and effective.

Creating an effective intepretation needs little bit hardwork. English is a must. But, absolutely, this is a communicative English. What do you need is simply use your English for more speaking and listening. Then, what you should do next is as follow;

1. Local Prespective.
It is important to be understood that local prespective is the prominent aspect of intepretation. I always translate every sentence by using local prespective and, even, I add some local humors. I never translate every single word because I know that it will not be work properly. And what the audience need is a simple and understandable information, not a perfect phrase by phrase translation.

2, Daily L1 Mode.
L1 means the native language. I consider that th best type of L1 to be used in an intepretation is daily typical of language. It helps the audience much easier to catch the message. A presentation which is presented in English is quiet difficult to be followed by unspoken English audience. I do not want to add more burden to the audience. They need to understand the presentation. For me, as an intepreter, delivering message totally is the most prominent aspect.

3. Human is not google translate.
Even though most of people who I know tell that google translate is a solution of language obstacles, I even do not have a sense of it. Google translate is a translator machine. It has a function as an online dictionary or spelling checker. It is not a smart idea to type some phrases in L1 and then translate it into L2 (target language). Asman intepreter, what I need, as I mentioned at point 2, is delivering the message. I do not need to make a perfect phrase by phrase translation. Besides, I am hundred percent believe that the audoence will get bored or even loose their intention if I do my intepretation with a google translate mode.

4. Simple but compact.
Package does matter. Generally, in a seminar, I get a lot of input from the speaker. The challenge is reproducing the input into a very simple but compact intepretation. I usually make a discussion with the speaker about the general idea of the presentation. Then, I break it down into two or three main idea. I keep everything short and simple, but at least touch almost all of the big idea.

Language is a habit. It will improve as many as you speak and make it as your habit. Motivation is the key of using English more and more.
