Why Liverpool fans should not turn Kolo Toure into a scapegoat for the club’s failing
Liverpool missed the chance to consolidate fourth position in the Premier League after drawing 1-1 with West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.
The draw left the Reds only two points ahead of Everton, three points ahead of Tottenham and seven points in front of Manchester United in the race for the final Champions League spot.
Liverpool supporters were expecting a comfortable win against West Brom after hammering Everton in midweek, but the pace and attitude in their side’s play was sadly lacking all afternoon.
Ultimately we were punished by an individual mistake which cancelled out Daniel Sturridge’s first half opener.
But Kolo Toure’s error, when he passed the ball across the edge of his own penalty box straight to Victor Anichebe, cost Liverpool two points.
Toure’s mistake was a bad one but one moment didn’t cost Liverpool the points. It was more to do with the attitude.
Liverpool produced another lacklustre performance that is beginning to threaten the club’s top four aspirations.
The draw against Aston Villa and the defeat at Hull were two similar performances, and they didn’t deserve the victory at West Brom as they created very few chances after the hosts leveled.
Toure is one of Liverpool’s most experienced players and he will be more devastated than anyone with the mistake he made.
We must remember the former Arsenal defender was playing in an unfamiliar left sided centre-back role. That wouldn’t have helped his confidence and he did look nervy, especially in possession.
But Toure has been terrific since arriving at Anfield and I’m sure over the course of the season he will more than make up for it.
It is now vital Liverpool bounce back against Arsenal
