The Roman Ninth Legion's mysterious loss
Spoiler for Siap tempur:
The disappearance of Rome's Ninth Legion has long baffled historians, but could a brutal ambush have been the event that forged the England-Scotland border, asks archaeologist Dr Miles Russell, of Bournemouth University.
One of the most enduring legends of Roman Britain concerns the disappearance of the Ninth Legion.
The theory that 5,000 of Rome's finest soldiers were lost in the swirling mists of Caledonia, as they marched north to put down a rebellion, forms the basis of a new film, The Eagle, but how much of it is true?
It is easy to understand the appeal of stories surrounding the loss of the Roman Ninth Legion - a disadvantaged band of British warriors inflicting a humiliating defeat upon a well-trained, heavily-armoured professional army.

IT is a question that has tantalised the military for almost 2,000 years. It is a mystery that has baffled historians and inspired writers and yet nobody has ever come up with a comprehensive answer to the simple question: “What happened to the Ninth?” The legendary Ninth Legion, or Legio IX Hispana, was the greatest of all Roman Legions. It was originally commanded by Julius Caesar and was known for its ferocity and fearlessness. Its number was as evocative in its day as the modern day 2nd Paras (The Paratroopers) or the Second World War 7th Armoured Division of the Eighth Army (the Desert Rats).
There was no other armed force in the ancient world to match it. It was the SAS of the Roman Empire. And then the 5,000-strong battlehardened legion that had fought its way across the length and breadth of Europe in the first and second centuries vanished. It marched into the mist of the Scottish Borders in 117AD and disappeared. It was never heard of again. Tales and legends of its fate abound. The legion was massacred by barbaric Scottish Picts and the defeat shamed the Roman Empire and prompted a conspiracy of silence.
