[Gagal Maning Son] powerpack Doosan untuk Tank K2 Korsel gagal dalam tes
S. Korea's battle tank fails engine test again

SEOUL, Sept. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's arms procurement agency has extended the test period for engine components of the indigenous battle tank K-2 over faulty parts, officials said Monday, further delaying the project plagued with technical problems.

The Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said it conducted tests last month on the engine and transmission, known as a "power pack," but it failed to meet the military's required operational capabilities.

The battle tank development project worth more than 2 trillion won (US$1.84 billion) first began in 2006 after a decade of research and development to replace the earlier versions, including the K1 and the aging U.S.-built M48 tanks.

But a series of technical problems have been detected in the indigenous power pack, hindering the original plan of deploying it starting in 2016.

While most other tests have been completed, the tank's engine failed during a durability test in April, and the DAPA extended the test period until the end of August, but it granted a month-long extension on the deadline again to decide whether to make changes to the project.

"The DAPA extended the testing period to discuss with other related agencies to decide whether to further postpone the development project or revise the project," a senior official said, speaking under customary condition of anonymity.

If the Korean-made parts fail the test again, the agency will consider importing German engine and transmission to develop the battle tank, according to the officials.

Modeled after the German-developed MTU-890, the K2 power pack is made up of a 1,500-horsepower diesel engine and transmission. Doosan Infracore and S
