Jakarta Deputy Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, better known as Ahok, has blasted the Home Ministry for not allowing holders of electronic identification cards (e-ID) to photocopy them.
"Why did we have to spend billions of rupiah on the project then?" said Ahok as quoted by kompas.com.
Ahok said that he was one of the early critics of the program, saying that it was a waste of taxpayer's money.
On Monday, Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi issued a circular warning e-ID holders against photocopying the card or exposing it to heat-emitting devices as this could damage the chip embedded in the card. Gamawan also warned holders not to damage the card by stapling it to other documents.
Data from the Home Ministry shows that by the end of last year, the government had printed 110 million of a potential total of 174 million e-IDs.
Of this number, 90 million had been distributed.
The ministry claimed that the Rp 5.8 trillion (US$601.04 million) project had exceeded its 2012 targets.
