DCNS Innovates with a New Weapon System for Submarines: Anti-Aircraft Defense

PARIS --- Submarines currently have no option but to run away when faced with torpedoes launched by helicopters and maritime patrol aircraft. Thanks to new defense systems jointly developed by DCNS and MBDA, however, they will be able to force attacking aircraft to change their tactics and to maintain a stand-off distance.
DCNS is now offering a new weapon system, available in two distinct versions, which will allow navies to protect their submarines from aerial threats.
Mast-mounted self-defense system
This variant has been designed for integration into the submarine’s sail. It is comprised of a telescopic mast carrying a small turret containing several Mistral short-range, IR-guided missiles.
Self-defense system fitted to an UUV
This variant, launched from the submarine’s torpedo tube, consists of an unmanned underwater vehicle containing a MICA medium-range air-intercept missile.
Both systems are integrated into the submarines SUBTICS combat management system, thus guaranteeing the weapons’ overall performance, from target designation to missile launch and to target interception.
