I Had His Enemy’s Child Chapter 01
While I was pursuing Preston Glenister, I fell prey to the charm of his rival, Frederick Hilder. I ended up sleeping with him and even pregnant with his child.
But as soon as the baby was born, he vanished into thin air, taking our child with him.
My world fell apart.
Three years later, I was broke and struggling. While I was scavenging for recyclables in the wealthy neighborhood, I saw a job posting for a nanny. I faked a resume and went to the interview.
The interviewer asked, "Ms. Aikrigg, you're so young. Have you ever had children? Do you know how to care for them?"
I replied casually, "I've had several."
Frederick, who was sitting nearby, snapped his head up and gritted out, "Several?"
I never expected to see Frederick among the panel of interviewers.
After all, when he ran off with our child back in college, he was just an aloof, penniless student.
Years had passed, and he was now dressed in a tailored suit, looking like a wealthy elite.
I desperately wanted this job. It paid 20,000 dollars a month and included free room and board. Even so, I couldn't stop myself. I stepped forward, grabbed Frederick's arm, and started sobbing uncontrollably.
"Frederick, where have you been?
"Where is our child?"
The nearby staff exchanged confused looks and quickly pulled me away.
"Another one claiming to be Mr. Alonzo's mother.
"Who screened this resume? We're going to be in trouble if Mr. Hilder holds us responsible for this."
I froze as the realization hit me. I was interviewing to be the nanny for my own son.
Frederick stared at me coldly.
There wasn't a hint of warmth in his eyes, only pure disgust.
"Mallorie Aikrigg, exactly how many children have you had?"
I hung my head and said cautiously, "Only one. It's yours."
He flipped through my resume and let out a mocking laugh.
"It says here you've had three children. You raised two of them yourself and breastfed both of them.
"Are the last two Preston's?"
A flash of hatred crossed his eyes.
"What? You were willing to breastfeed his children, yet you couldn't even be bothered to look at ours?"
It was three years ago, while I was pursuing Preston, I had fallen completely under Frederick's spell.
After I gave birth to our child, I suffered from a severe fever that lasted for days.
Because I had to take medication to break the fever, I wasn't allowed to breastfeed the baby.
Frederick hadn't known the truth.
When he saw me refusing to nurse our child, he had patiently made chicken soup, brought it to my bedside, and gently tried to comfort me.
He had said, "Getting your health back is what matters most."
I had lashed out at him back then.
"Who wants this greasy chicken soup?
"Are you trying to fatten me up so I end up as some frumpy stay-at-home mom, stuck at home raising the kid?
"Giving birth to your child was the worst luck of my life—we can't even afford a postpartum care center."
The smile froze on his face.
At that time, Frederick spent his days working on his thesis and his nights working part-time jobs.
He gave me every cent he earned, yet I never showed him an ounce of kindness.
As soon as he left to deliver food orders, I would take the soup he had made and bring it to Preston instead.
The Glenister family had promised me 20 million dollars if I took care of Preston.
With that kind of money, I could finally openly support Frederick and our child.
But I never expected that the moment I arrived at the bar's private room, put down the soup, and said ingratiatingly, "Preston, I made this soup just for you."
The next second, Frederick pushed through the door, holding takeout bags, and was soaked from the snow and wind outside.
The group of rich guys surrounding Preston began to mock Frederick. "Isn't this the great genius? How did you end up delivering food?"
Preston casually flicked a lighter in his hand.
He scoffed. "Do you need money?"
Frederick's gaze fell on me. His face darkened as he gritted his teeth. "I have a child to raise."
