Renting My Husband To His Old Flame Chapter 01
After Leonard Mayfield and I remarried, I started renting him out.
Whenever his old flame, Marlene Lampson, called him away, I no longer cried or caused a scene—I simply put a price on his time.
The rates were steep—20,000 dollars an hour during the day, 40,000 at night, and triple on holidays.
Three months into this little arrangement, my bank account had grown by almost 4 million dollars.
Once, we were about to go shopping for my evening gown when Marlene called, sobbing that she'd nicked her hand chopping vegetables. Without even looking up, I held out my phone so Leonard could scan my Venmo QR code.
Another night, my temperature spiked out of nowhere. Leonard was driving me to the ER when Marlene called, whining that the thunderstorm was too loud and she couldn't sleep. I calmly grabbed my umbrella and told him to pull over and drop me off at the next intersection. He hesitated, but I just gave him a smile. "Don't forget to wire the money."
Then came the day of our daughter Esther Mayfield's routine hospital checkup. Sure enough, Marlene called. "Ollie wants to go to the amusement park," she said, "and he really needs a man to go on the big rides with him."
Leonard hung up, turned, and crouched down to talk to Esther. Before he could even get a word out, Esther stuck out her hand, copying me. "It's okay, Dad. Just send the money. You have to pay triple today."

Just like that, whatever guilt had been on Leonard's face evaporated. He stood up, pointed a finger at Essie, and glared at me. "Ariella, is this what you're teaching her?"
I calmly pulled Esther behind my legs. "What's wrong with it? If she isn't getting your love, she might as well get paid. At least she won't have to go through a messy divorce to learn that lesson like I did."
Leonard froze, totally speechless.
Then his phone buzzed again. The voice of Oliver Lampson, Marlene's son, blared through the speaker. "Mr. Mayfield, hurry up! You promised to ride the roller coaster with me over and over again!"
Esther's little fingers dug into the hem of my shirt. Leonard caught the movement, and for once, he didn't instantly run out the door. He reached out, trying to smooth her hair.
"Essie, be a good girl and go to the hospital with Mom today. Once you're feeling better, I'll take you to the amusement park, okay?"
Esther ducked away from his hand. Blinking her big eyes, she repeated, "It's fine, Dad. Just give me the money."
Leonard's face darkened. Before storming out, he threw a parting shot over his shoulder. "Keep being difficult, Ariella. Both of you. You're completely unreasonable."
The front door slammed shut. Esther tugged on my arm, holding up her smartwatch for me to see.
"Mom, Dad transferred a number with a lot of zeros. Is this enough to pay for my surgery?"
Looking down at her, I choked back the lump in my throat and pulled her into a tight hug. "It's enough, Essie. As soon as your surgery is done, I'm taking you far away from here."
Later, while we sat waiting for Esther's test results, my phone lit up with news alerts. The paparazzi had already snapped photos of Leonard, Marlene, and Oliver at the amusement park.
The headline read, "Leonard Mayfield Takes New Girlfriend to Amusement Park; Her Son is Already Calling Him Dad."
I zoomed in on the picture, staring at Leonard's relaxed, easy smile. I honestly couldn't remember the last time he'd smiled like that with Esther and me.
A second later, my phone rang. It was Leonard.
"Ari, don't be mad. The tabloids are just making things up. I've already paid to have the articles taken down."
It took me a second to realize he was panicking over Oliver calling him Dad.
"I'm not angry," I said flatly. "Kids just say whatever comes to mind. Since I rented you out for the day, you should focus on spending time with them."
I hung up before he could say another word.
Esther's test results finally came back. The doctor said her condition was well-managed, meaning we were cleared to schedule her heart bypass surgery for next month.
Marlene and Oliver were the exact reason Leonard and I had divorced the first time around. Back then, to teach me a lesson, Leonard had unleashed his top-tier lawyers to make sure I walked away from the marriage with absolutely no money or assets.
And the very next day, Esther was diagnosed with myocardial ischemia, leaving my little girl at constant risk of sudden heart failure.
Because of Leonard's influence, no one would hire me. My friends and family wouldn't lend me a dime, either. Watching Esther's condition get worse by the day, I finally gave in to him.
Now that Esther was finally out of the woods and her surgery date was set, I hired an agency to handle the visa paperwork for the two of us.
A text from Leonard popped up on my phone: "When are you coming home? I made your favorites."
I didn't reply.
An hour later, I pushed open the front door to find Leonard serving food to Marlene and Oliver.
