He Thought I Betrayed Him Until I Died Chapter 01
I'm a mermaid. To protect my people, I went ashore to ask my childhood sweetheart, Conrad Sinclair, for help.
But Conrad believed I was responsible for his parents' disappearance. The man who once loved me more than anything locked me up for three years.
He cut open my chest again and again to take my energy core for another woman. He chained me beside his bed. Forced me to listen while he slept with his wife only a few feet away.
He hated me so much.
And yet every time I was close to dying, he was also the one forcing medicine into my mouth.
"Addie," he whispered one night, "tell me where my parents are."
But I could never tell him the truth. Because the secret I was protecting… was also protecting him.
What Conrad didn't know was— a mermaid who stays away from the ocean for three years will die.
And I only had three days left.

At 3:00 a.m., the wooden door to the storage room was kicked open.
Someone yanked me up and slapped me hard, over and over, until my lip split and bled.
Conrad's assistant, Dennis Fairfax, dragged me out by the legs while cursing, "Mrs. Sinclair's hurt, how dare you sleep like nothing happened?"
The damp ocean air carried a salty scent mixed with blood, and the trail of blood stretched all the way into Conrad's bedroom.
Seeing the bloody smear I left, he frowned.
"Alexa is hurt, so go treat her."
I looked up and saw Alexandra's flushed, glowing face, and then her rounded belly.
Before I could react, Conrad slapped me again.
He looked down at me with contempt.
"I told you to treat Alexa. How dare you look at her with those eyes?"
I lowered my head immediately.
"I'm sorry."
Then, I slowly crawled to the bedside.
That was when I realized she'd gotten up in the middle of the night to feed the captive mermaids and had been bitten on the fingertip.
After all these years, I was used to her constant problems.
I lifted my clothes and drove my nails into my chest. Sweat ran down my face as I endured the pain and pulled out my energy core to heal her.
In the silence, Conrad spoke in a flat tone.
"Adelaide, acting pitiful won't work on me."
In his eyes, I was just playing the victim because mermaid blood could also heal wounds. Unfortunately, mine no longer worked.
Alexandra woke with a soft cough, and Conrad immediately pulled her into his arms.
"Does it still hurt?"
She bit her lip and glanced at my chest.
"Honey, I don't know why, but ever since I got pregnant, the smell of blood makes me feel sick."
At that, Conrad kicked me aside.
"Get out and stand guard."
I crawled out slowly, listening to his tender voice behind me.
"Alexa, you haven't been sleeping well lately. Is the baby bothering you? Let me check."
My heart tightened even though it had been numb for so long, and my unhealed wounds started bleeding again.
A maid dumped a bucket of foul-smelling water over me and looked at me with disgust.
"Filthy monster! Aren't you supposed to have healing abilities? Why are you still bleeding? You're disgusting!"
The mop struck my temple, and I flinched in pain.
"Clean it up, or I'll go get Mr. Sinclair."
I spent the rest of the night bent over, mopping the floor while listening to the sounds of intimacy from the room, and a tear slipped quietly down my face.
The look of disgust on Conrad's face replayed in my mind again and again.
It wouldn't be long before everything ended.
Even immortal mermaids die, and I only had three days left.
