The Werebeast I Almost Abandoned Chapter 01
My werebeast scratched me for the third time.
"I told you not to touch it," Brennen snapped, "Rosie spent 1,300 dollars on this collar. What if it gets your scent all over it?"
When he noticed the beads of blood rising on the back of my hand, he froze.
Then he looked away, "Don't blame me—it was just a stress response. Put some ointment on it yourself. I'm not doing it."
This time, I didn't say a single word.
I turned around, walked into my bedroom, and calmly messaged the Werebeast Administration:
"My werebeast has been displaying repeated aggressive behavior. I am confirming my decision to return him. Please send someone to collect him within three days."
After sending it, I opened my chat with the Werebeast Shelter.
"Hi. Could I come see the stray werewolf I asked you to rescue again?"
-
The shelter wrote back right away.
"Absolutely! He's all better for the most part and just cleared his latest vet checkup."
"He's been on his best behavior too."
"When do you want to stop by? I can book you a slot."
I paused for a second.
"Tomorrow," I typed. "Ten in the morning."
"Sounds good. I'll get that scheduled for you right now."
Just then, an alert popped up from the Werebeast Bureau.
"Sorry for the trouble. Per our rules, any werebeast that harms its owner will be taken in for reeducated. We're finishing up your return forms now. Once done, an officer will come pick him up."
"Alright."
I looked up when I heard a noise by the door.
Brennen was leaning in the doorway, arms folded, staring at me clearly annoyed.
"You fix that cut yet? It's already nine. You still haven't made my dinner."
Now that I'd made up my mind to send him back, it dawned on me: Brennen was nothing special at all. He was always frowning at me, those dark blue eyes forever filled with irritation and contempt. For a werebeast, he was totally useless.
My gaze must've turned icy, because he tensed up. He then spotted my hand still unwrapped and let out a mocking huff.
"Oh come on. Quit acting like you're the poor victim. Can't you deal with a little scratch on your own? You make me look like a total ingrate. Look, none of this would've happened if you'd left Rosie's gift alone. It wasn't even my fault. Honestly, this injury's probably good for you. Maybe you'll finally learn your lesson. I've told you time and time again: stay away from my things."
The Rosie he rambled on about was Roselyn Wakefield, a rich heiress whose werebeast was his buddy. I'd never forced Brennen to wear a collar. Since he was meant to be my mate, I always thought collars were far too confining. Besides, he'd told me straight from day one that he hated wearing them. This collar, though? It was a gift from Roselyn.
He was totally smitten with her. To him, she was pretty, kind, and super good to werebeasts — nothing like me. I worked all day, and always came home reeking of weird smells from my job.
Earlier today, he'd been complaining to Roselyn's werebeast, Stanley Logan.
"I'm so jealous of you," he'd said. "You've got an amazing owner. Mine's nothing like that. You have no idea how much I can't stand Ashlynn's smell. She comes home grimy and stinking every single night. It's revolting. The smell rubs off on me, and all the other werebeasts steer clear. It's driving me up the wall. I honestly wish I could get a different owner."
He'd ranted to Stanley about tons of other stuff too. Said I was terrible, that my cooking was practically impossible to eat, that I tugged too hard on his fur when brushing his tail, and that I had zero idea how to take care of a werebeast.
This wasn't the first time he'd talked like this. Before, I'd always blamed myself. I'd wonder what I was doing wrong, why I couldn't make him feel loved — and then I'd bend over backwards to make him happy. But after hearing the voice clip Stanley sent me today, I finally saw the truth.
It wasn't me. Brennen was just an ungrateful brute who'd never appreciate what he had.
