His Love Was A Trap Novel Chapter 01

Two years after Dylan Hernandez walked away from his criminal past for Adeline Whitley, his enemies still came after her family to get revenge on him.
In that kidnapping, Adeline lost her parents. And her younger sister, Ariella Whitley—fresh out of college—was assaulted, and the footage was uploaded to the dark web. Adeline herself was gravely injured and spent six months in the hospital.
Dylan was consumed by guilt, in unbearable agony.
For six months, he stayed by Adeline's bedside every night and visited her parents' graves every day.
He endured everything—Ariella's breakdowns, her blows, her curses—as she sank into severe depression.
He apologized to Adeline over and over again, and he often suffered from nightmares.
Dylan talked about how he'd rather bear the pain for her instead.
After Adeline was discharged, Dylan brought her back to the manor he'd spent half a year building.
"From now on, no one will be able to hurt you here, Addie."
But even that didn't feel enough to Dylan, so he found her a so-called stand-in—Yvonne Sanders.
"From now on, I'll bring Yvonne along to all my public appearances.
"They won't think you're the one I love most anymore.
"That way, you'll be safe.
"Addie, I can't ever let them hurt you again. I don't think I'd be able to handle that."
Hearing Dylan's tearful speech, Adeline accepted the arrangement.
Aside from visiting her parents' graves and checking on her sister, Adeline barely left the manor.
In less than a year, everyone in Memphis knew that Dylan was dating someone else.
Yvonne accompanied Dylan to different banquets and went out to sea with him.
She danced with him during dinners.
He even gave half of his company's shares to Yvonne.
Dylan returned to the manor less often and stayed for shorter periods each time.
And once after their sax, he suddenly said he had work to handle and left late that night.
Adeline sat up and casually mentioned Yvonne's name.
"Are you jealous?"
Dylan picked Adeline up along with the blanket, lowered his head, and kissed the scar on her collarbone.
His voice was hoarse as he coaxed, "Don't believe the nonsense online.
"Yvonne is just a tool, and the share transfer is fake. You're the only one I love.
"Things are picking up at the new company, and there's a lot to handle. We'll go somewhere once things settle down."
Adeline leaned into Dylan's arms and nodded softly. "Okay, I'll wait for you."
After Dylan left, Adeline didn't sleep all night.
Early the next morning, she received a call from the hospital. Ariella had an episode and ran out the night before.
In a panic, Adeline rushed to Dylan's office.
Standing just outside the CEO's office, Adeline couldn't mask the fear in her eyes as she sobbed.
"Don't bite me there, you jerrk. It hurts..."
Yvonne's breathless, sultry voice made Adeline stop in her tracks.
"Didn't you have fun with Adeline last night?" Yvonne pushed Dylan away playfully.
Dylan's eyes were filled with unsatisfied desire as he grabbed Yvonne's ankle, pulled her back, and pressed himself onto her impatiently.
"How could she compare to you? You're the only one who can satisfy me."
After a flurry of movement, Dylan collapsed onto Yvonne, completely still.
Yvonne pushed him off, grabbed something to cover herself, and questioned him.
"Dylan, when are we getting married? Have you seriously fallen for Adeline?"
"What are you talking about?" Dylan scoffed.
"If it weren't to protect you, do you think I would've pursued her back then?
"Before all my enemies were gone, everyone believed she was the one I loved the most. Otherwise, we couldn't have used her to draw out the last of them."
Dylan tidied himself nonchalantly.
"Now, all my enemies are either dead or in prison. She's already served her greatest purpose.
"She lost her parents, and her sister went insane because of us. Either way, I've got to be responsible for her.
"Right now, her entire world revolves around me. It's not the time for us to get married. Once Adeline is pregnant and has a child, I'll talk to her about marrying you. By then, she'll be occupied with the baby."
Yvonne placed a finger on his heart. "You're the worst."
"Am I?" Dylan grabbed her hand and pulled her into his arms. He then tugged at Yvonne's clothes that she had just put back on and pressed himself against her. "That's not all I've got!"
Adeline stood outside, frozen in shock as she listened to them inside.
The truth was impossible to accept, and tears streamed down her face.
Yvonne was never her so-called stand-in. If anything, Adeline was the sacrificial lamb.
Everything was a lie—Dylan's year-long pursuit, his decision to leave everything behind for love, and the manor he built for her.
She was just bait.
Once Dylan's enemies were gone, he couldn't wait to place Yvonne by his side, while she was kept confined in the manor.
Without his permission, Adeline couldn't even leave.
She once believed her relationship with Dylan had hurt her family and lost sleep over it, but now, she realized even that so-called "love" had been nothing but a lie.
Tears blurred Adeline's vision as a sharp pain slowly spread through her body.
Suddenly, a phone rang, startling all three of them.
Inside the office, Dylan stopped and snapped coldly, "Who's there?"
