Beneath The Broken Vows Chapter 01
Rebecca Navarro was known as the perfect girl in the Army Band. She was gentle, soft-spoken, and always played by the rules.
The only reckless thing she had ever done was she bought a train ticket and escaped the night she heard she was being married off to Wilkinson Rutledge, the most notorious troublemaker in the compound.
She refused to throw her life away on a guy known for fighting, slacking off, and living like a delinquent.
But fate didn't let her get far. When Wilkinson chased her down south, they were caught in a once-in-a-century typhoon and ended up trapped in the collapsed basement of a warehouse.
In the darkness, Rebecca's leg was broken, and she couldn't move, while Wilkinson inhaled toxic dust trying to save her.
Just when she thought they were both going to die there, he pressed their only water bottle to her lips. His voice came out rough, like it had been scraped raw. "Drink. I'm not dying."
He meant it. To keep himself from passing out, he dragged a blade across his arm again and again, using the pain to stay conscious.
When aftershocks hit, and a beam came crashing down, he threw himself over her, taking the impact on his back. His flesh tore open, but he didn't let a single speck of dust touch her.
"I'm sorry..." Rebecca sobbed as she looked at him, covered in blood. "If I hadn't run off, none of this would've happened..."
"Why are you crying?"
He struggled to lift his head, that reckless, defiant look still there, but his eyes were so deep it was unsettling.
"I used to be a mess. My reputation was trash. A good, educated girl like you had every reason to look down on me. But I regret it. If I'd known it was you sooner, I would've turned my life around.
"I'm probably not making it out of this, but at least I kept you safe."
In that instant, the walls around her heart collapsed, and in the thick, metallic smell of blood, everything inside her fell into chaos.
Luckily, the rescue team arrived in time. Despite her parents' objections, Rebecca married him. At the wedding, Wilkinson swore in front of everyone that he'd spend his life treating her right.
And he did. After they got married, he dropped his old habits, built a business empire, and became the richest man in the city. The women from his past disappeared, and his world narrowed down to her.
The day they found out she was pregnant, he spent a fortune handing out double bonuses to every employee in his company, practically shouting his happiness to the world.
Everyone said Wilkinson, once a wild stallion, had finally been tamed by Rebecca's gentle reins.
Until that prenatal checkup.
Wilkinson had a business dinner he couldn't get out of, so Rebecca went to the appointment alone. Afterward, she headed to the Rutledge Group in downtown, planning to leave the ultrasound on his desk so he'd see their baby the moment he walked in.
But the heavy wooden door was slightly open, and laughter spilled out from inside.
"Kinny, you're quite the model husband these days. Why are you here smoking with us instead of going to your wife's appointment?"
Rebecca stopped in her tracks. Through the gap, she saw him lounging in his chair, a cigarette between his fingers. His sharp features carried a cold, distant edge.
"It's not even my kid. Why would I bother?"
