A Love That Never Existed Chapter 01

Everyone thought Keeva Doyle only loved Bastian Santoro.
But Bastian only wanted Mallory Doyle.
To marry him, Keeva once stood outside the Santoro estate for an entire day and night.
After the wedding, she did anything to stop him from divorcing her.
Even let Mallory use her as a punching bag whenever the mood struck.
It made Keeva the biggest joke in New York society.
On their third anniversary, Mallory had another meltdown.
This time, Keeva was two months pregnant. She ended the pregnancy.
It was the only child she and Bastian had conceived in three years.
After the procedure, still weak, she went straight to the Santoro estate.
“Three years are up. The contract is over.” Keeva looked at Bastian's mother, Isabella.
“I want to divorce Bastian.”
Isabella closed her eyes. “Getting rid of that baby wasn't smart, Keeva. That was a life.”
“It was what Bastian wanted.” Keeva's face was pale, but her voice was steady.
“You know him. Once he decides something, no one changes it. That baby was never going to be born.”
Isabella opened her eyes and studied her for a long moment.
“Since you know he's that kind of man,” she said, “have you ever thought about why he couldn't get that divorce for three years?”
Keeva didn't answer.
Isabella sighed softly.
“I'll give you another hundred million dollars. Staying three more years?”
Keeva finally lifted her head.
“No,” she said. “This marriage is destroying him. And it’s destroying me.”
More importantly, the first hundred million was already more than enough.
She and her sister could live on it for the rest of their lives.
...
Seeing that Keeva's mind was made up, Isabella didn't press her.
She simply had her lawyer bring out the divorce papers that had been prepared three years ago.
Keeva took the Montblanc pen and signed her name without a flicker of hesitation.
“Procedurally, the divorce won't be final for another thirty days.” Isabella put the documents away.
“For this last month, you are still Bastian's wife.”
When Keeva walked out of the estate, the sun hit her full in the face.
The chill that had settled deep in her bones since the surgery finally began to dissipate.
The weight that had crushed her for three years at last seemed to lift.
For the first time in a long time, she smiled.
She had just returned to their Upper East Side apartment when Bastian walked in behind her.
“Maria.”
He called toward the kitchen.
Maria, in her uniform, hurried out and placed a tureen of chicken soup on the coffee table.
“Sir, the soup you asked for.”
Bastian nodded, his gaze landing on Keeva's bloodless face.
“Drink it. You need to get your strength back.”
“I'm fine.”
Keeva walked around the coffee table, heading for the stairs.
“Mallory's having another episode,” Bastian said from behind her. “She's locked herself in the wine cellar's cold room and won't come out.”
Keeva stopped, her fingers tightening into fists.
She knew it.
Bastian was never kind without a reason.
“Our marriage is what did this to her,” Bastian went on. “Go down and take her place.”
Keeva turned around.
“I just had an abortion.”
Bastian's eyes fell, hiding whatever emotion was in them.
“I know. The surgery went smoothly. The doctor said you're fine. I even had soup made for you.”
He paused.
“Mallory's always been delicate. She can't handle the cold. You go in for her. Once she's calmed down, I'll have someone let you out. Half a day, at most. You'll be fine.”
“I refuse.”
Keeva looked straight at him.
“If our marriage is the problem, then she can have my title. She can be Mrs. Santoro.”
