The Storm Is Over Chapter 01
The moment I found out the investor was Ethan Miller, I knew I was going to lose to Blair Hamilton.
She was his first love.
The meeting ended. Ethan picked Blair's proposal. Just like I knew he would.
Blair found me afterward. She said, "You may be his wife. But when it comes to me, I'll always be his first choice. Everything you've killed yourself to get—I can have it without lifting a finger."
We'd been rivals since we were students. Her mother stole my father. And she had never had any trouble stealing Ethan's heart either.
I looked across the room at him. Tired. So tired. And something inside me just didn't want to fight anymore.
This time, I was done.
Ethan or my career. I chose my career.
......
The new investor was good-looking. Sharp. Money. Family name. The whole package. Everyone in the office was talking about him.
The investor was Ethan Miller. My husband.
The second I knew he was the client, I understood exactly how this was going to end. Blair and I had been locked in a silent war for years. And this battle was already lost.
The break room buzzed with gossip.
"The investor is Ethan Miller. CEO of Miller Capital. Heir to the whole Miller empire."
"The guy's a catch. If our team's design gets his approval, we're set. No more scrambling for commissions."
"I bet Blair's team takes it. You know why? I heard his first love works right here in our design department. Blair Hamilton. His college sweetheart. Word is he's doing this whole investment just for her."
My chest tightened. I went back to my office and closed the door.
By then, everyone knew. Ethan Miller. Miller Capital. The news had spread through the entire floor.
My boss called me and Blair in together.
"Olivia. Blair. Miller Capital is backing our project. Ethan Miller himself. I want both of you to lead your teams and put together a proposal. You have one month."
He gave Blair a long look. The admiration was barely hidden. It was obvious he'd heard the rumors too. He knew exactly why Ethan had chosen our firm.
I hadn't even made it out of the office yet, but I already knew. My team's proposal was dead on arrival. Going up against Blair, I wasn't a competitor. I was just there to fill the frame.
Out in the hallway, Blair stopped. We stood face to face. She met my eyes and smiled. Bright. Triumphant.
"Olivia. Let's compete fair and square."
But she wasn't worried. Not even a little. Because she knew what I knew. Between her and me, Ethan would always, always choose her.
I watched her walk away. Then I turned and left.
The design department erupted. If my proposal got rejected, I'd be stuck working under Blair for the foreseeable future. Taking orders from her. Swallowing her critiques. Pretending to be grateful for the privilege.
I wasn't going to swallow anything.
Blair stood at the center of the crowd. Before the end of the day, everyone pressed in around her.
"You're amazing, Blair. Seriously."
Across the crowd, our eyes met. She was surrounded, the life of every room. Next to her, my corner felt like a freezer. I stood alone. Nobody beside me.
She pressed her lips together. A small, quiet smile. Just for me.
I looked away. Grabbed my coat. Walked out.
