He Begged After Ten Years Chapter 01
On the day of our engagement party, I couldn't reach Marco, my boyfriend of ten years.
I waited for eight hours in the restaurant we had booked.
After dark, he finally called. His voice was thin with exhaustion.
"Celeste, I'm sorry. Something came up. Your parents didn't wait too long, did they?"
I rubbed my aching calves. "No," I lied.
He was silent for two seconds.
"Can we move the party to next week? I'll explain it to them myself."
Just then, my phone buzzed.
A photo of Marco and Alessia appeared on my Instagram feed.
In the picture, they were pressed close together. The comments were a flood of cheers, congratulating Alessia on the twenty-five gifts Marco had given her for her twenty-fifth birthday.
The final gift was Marco himself, who had flown to Miami.
In other words, he had vanished for eight hours not for work, but to celebrate the birthday of the girl he always called his "little sister."
Then a new iMessage popped up.
It was from Alessia.
[Celeste, Marco has always cared about me more than anyone. Do you really still want to marry him?]
I let the screen go dark. For once, I didn't call him to demand an explanation.
I sent Marco a text.
"No need. We're done."
I didn't want to marry Marco DeLuca anymore.
***
"Dad, I'll do it. The marriage. With the Rhodes family. I'll marry Sterling."
My father was quiet on the other end of the line for a moment.
"As long as you've thought it through, sweetheart. By ending it now, you're finally putting yourself first."
After I hung up, I made dinner, just like any other night.
Roast chicken, a Caesar salad, and cream of mushroom soup.
When Marco came home, he was holding a bouquet of white tulips.
They used to be my favorite.
"I went out of my way to get these for you. Forgive me?"
Any other time, I would have taken them and thrown my arms around him.
This time, I just kept my eyes on my salad, my hand never leaving my fork.
"Still angry? I'll buy you flowers for a week, how about that?"
He lifted a hand and brushed back his rain-damp hair, flashing me the smile that had always gotten him out of everything.
I used to fall for it every time.
Not anymore.
I set down my fork, gathered my plate, and turned to leave the room.
"There's no need."
