When Love Became Regret Chapter 01

Three years into my marriage to Holden Knox, I overheard him talking to a friend.
"So, Holt, what's it like being married to a cripple?" the man teased.
Disgust flickered in Holden's eyes as he replied flatly, "It's like carrying around a black trash bag you can never get rid of."
Sitting in my wheelchair, I clenched the thin medical report in my hand and quietly wheeled myself away.
A month later, I died in Sydney.
And after reading my diary, Holden completely fell apart.
--
Bathed in sunlight, I sat quietly in my wheelchair, waiting for my caregiver, Fiona, to return with the results.
Today was the third anniversary of my marriage to Holden.
Three years ago, I shoved Holden out of the path of a speeding truck, only to be pulled under its wheels myself and lose both my legs.
I told him not to pity me or feel guilty, much less stick with me out of obligation.
But he stayed and took care of me meticulously, and six months later, he proposed.
The video of his grand proposal went viral online.
Amid countless well-wishes from online strangers, we got married. But gradually, he became a completely different person.
He hardly ever came home. Even at company events where I was expected, he would only show up with his secretary.
When I confronted him about it, he said, "Marielle, don't forget, you're disabled."
I looked down at the empty space where my legs used to be and fell silent.
After that day, Holden never appeared in front of me again.
The sound of Fiona's footsteps pulled me back to reality.
She looked at me, misty-eyed, and handed me the report. "Stomach cancer. Late stage."
I took out my phone. After hesitating for a long time, I still decided to call Holden.
He didn't answer.
The early autumn sunlight was warm, but I felt cold all over.
After returning to the villa, I received a message from Taryn Knox.
She had never liked me.
Even on our wedding day, she had pointed at my legs and said, "If you hadn't pushed my brother, there's no way you would've ever married into our family."
The Knox family was the richest in New York. When she said that, no one objected.
I even saw the guests at the reception nodding in agreement.
Holden had scolded Taryn.
Fuming, she blurted out that Holden had an unforgettable love.
After we got home, Holden explained it to me.
"She was just a junior in college. I was only looking after her, that's all."
Until last month, when Bianca Keir came back to the U.S. and became his secretary, I had felt a flicker of jealousy and confronted him about it.
He explained, "Bianca couldn't find a job, so she asked me to help her get into the Knox Group. There's nothing between us but work. Can you trust me?
"Besides, I already have a wife now.
"Silly girl, do you really have so little faith in your husband?"

I chose to believe Holden.
I believed in the three years we had shared.
Holden and I met because of a car accident.
That day, I was crossing an intersection when I saw Holden, his head lowered over his phone, his brow furrowed.
And the large truck was coming straight at him.
I shoved him out of the way without thinking.
What I didn't expect was that after the driver slammed on the brakes, the truck tipped over and crushed me beneath it.
Later, I was taken to the hospital.
Six months later, Holden confessed his feelings to me, his face flushed red.
Uneasy, I turned him down. After I watched him leave, I curled up under the blanket and cried.
But to my surprise, Holden pulled me into his arms. "Silly girl."

After we got married, Holden truly doted on me.
I was just too cautious, too hesitant about everything.
And with Bianca's identity being so sensitive, I started to regret fighting with Holden during that time, so when I received that message from Taryn, I didn't hesitate.
I had the driver take me to the club Taryn had mentioned.
When I arrived outside the private room, the door hadn't been fully shut and was left open a crack.
I saw Holden in a white dress shirt, his face drawn with fatigue, drinking glass after glass as if he were trying to drown himself in it. He was clearly already drunk.
One of the men beside him patted him on the shoulder. It was one of Holden's friends.
"What is it? You have a fight with your wife?"
Holden frowned, but said nothing.
"Honestly, I've always wanted to know—what's it like being married to a cripple?"
There was a trace of disgust in Holden's eyes as he answered coldly, "Like carrying around a black trash bag you can never get rid of."
