My Neighbor Is His First Love Chapter 01

The day I finalized my divorce with Callum Wexler, the courthouse staff couldn't help stealing glances at me.
Maybe it was because I seemed too calm.
Or maybe it was because I was alone the whole time, even though I was pregnant.
When my friend heard the news, she stayed silent on the phone for a full 30 seconds.
"Did you two fight?"
"No."
"Did he cheat?"
"...Not exactly."
"Then what are you pulling?"
She was completely baffled.
The Wexler family was powerful, and Callum was known in our circle as a perfect gentleman. No scandals, no clubbing, even wearing his wedding ring to every business dinner.
When I married him, everyone said I was marrying up.
I touched my slightly rounded belly and thought back.
It was probably because, a few days ago, I found out that his childhood sweetheart, Leona Hartwell, had returned to the country.
And the place he arranged for her to stay was only 800 meters from our home.
***
I discovered it while going through the old phone he had left on the dining table.
I wasn't snooping.
My phone had run out of battery, and I needed to call the hospital back about today's prenatal appointment.
When the screen lit up, a WhatsApp message popped up.
The contact name was "Lena."
"Cal, the new place is so beautiful! I changed the curtains to the color you said you liked before. Do you have time to come take a look?"
New place. Curtains. The color you said you liked before.
Those phrases lined up together like a needle, piercing straight into my temple.
I didn't open the message.
Not out of respect for his privacy.
But because my hand was trembling, my finger was unable to press the right spot.
I put the phone back exactly where it had been.
Then I sat at the table and stared at it for a full twenty minutes.
During those twenty minutes, two more messages came in.
"This set of tableware is the one you said looked nice before. I found the same one!"
"Cal, when are you coming over? I want to cook for you."
I knew Leona.
To be precise, before our marriage, everyone in our circle knew her. Callum's childhood sweetheart. They had grown up together, and their families had almost arranged a marriage between them.
Later, she went to France to study pastry, and the matter quietly faded away.
She didn't attend our wedding.
Callum said she was overseas and couldn't make it back.
I had believed him at the time.
Now that I thought about it, maybe it wasn't that she could not come back. Maybe she just didn't want to.
I went to the prenatal checkup alone.
In the ultrasound room, the doctor pressed the probe against my abdomen. The cold gel made me shiver.
"The heartbeat is strong. The baby is very healthy."
On the screen was a blurry shape. The doctor pointed and said that was the head, that was the hand, that was the foot.
I stared at that vague outline, and suddenly my eyes stung.
Not because I was moved.
But because the chair beside me was empty.
I took out my phone, hesitated for a long time, and sent Callum a message.
"I had my prenatal checkup today. The doctor said the baby is healthy."
After sending it, I stared at the screen.
One minute.
Five minutes.
Ten minutes.
It was read, but there was no reply.
I sent another message.
"Are you coming home for dinner tonight?"
This time, the reply came quickly.
"I have a business dinner. Eat by yourself."
Eat by yourself.
I had heard those words for two years.
In two years of marriage, the number of times he came home could be counted on both hands.
Every time he returned, it was late at night. He would take a shower, sleep, and leave again early the next morning.
Sometimes I wondered whether this place was really a home to him or just a hotel.
But I had never asked.
Because every time I wanted to say something, he was busy. His phone would ring, his assistant would knock, and a meeting would begin.
There is no place for me in his massive world.
