He Kept A Backup Bride For Our Wedding Chapter 01

On the day of my wedding, my fiancé, Liam, was a thousand miles away at a Napa winery, anxiously awaiting his “late” bride.
He had no idea I never boarded the plane to California.
Three days earlier, to appease his sister, he had scrapped the Montana ranch wedding I treasured more than life itself for a lavish winery ceremony—a place he felt was more appropriate than the home of the “country people” he despised and assumed could never understand real class.
I went to confront him, only to overhear him on the phone, his voice dripping with condescending certainty.
“Chloe’s desperate to be one of us. She wouldn’t dare pull a no-show.”
“All she knows how to do anymore is behave.”
I actually laughed.
So that’s what I was to him: a spineless accessory to be positioned however he pleased.
So, at the exact moment his grand wedding was supposed to begin, I stood under the Montana sun and exchanged rings with another man.
Then I had my lawyer overnight a package: every gift he'd ever given me, and an acquisition agreement that would bankrupt his family by morning.
...
This all started three days ago.
My phone lit up with a link from Liam, followed by a digital brochure.
I opened the link. It was the official website for a luxury winery in Napa Valley. Sun-drenched grapevines, endless manicured lawns—everything expensive and refined.
Then I opened the brochure.
On the cover, a woman in a backless silk gown held a glass of champagne, glancing over her shoulder from the winery’s terrace. Her golden hair gleamed in the California sun, every inch the queen of Dallas society.
It was Ashley, Liam’s sister.
My finger hovered over Ashley’s dazzling smile. The sheer absurdity of it hit me like a physical blow.
I was the bride. This was supposed to be my wedding.
But the face on the brochure belonged to Liam’s sister—the one who always had to be “looked after” and “understood.”
I knew Liam. He probably assumed the wedding planner had already told me. Sending the address was just his way of making sure this “Montana country girl” could find her way to Napa. Condescension dressed up as thoughtfulness.
With a lead weight in my stomach, I drove back to our place in Dallas.
Before I even stepped inside, I heard Liam’s voice, thick with impatience, snapping at the housekeeper. “Chloe isn’t a toddler. She’s home a little late and you have to bother me with it?”
“But sir, Miss Chloe left right after a call from the wedding planner this afternoon. I was just worried…”
Liam scoffed, a sound I knew all too well—a mixture of arrogance and the unshakeable certainty of Texas new money.
“She left? She’s probably booking flights to Napa and packing her bags. Relax. She's desperate to be a part of this family. She’s nothing without me.”
His voice dropped, laced with a smug, boastful tone. “I’m giving her a taste of the real world, showing her what high society actually looks like. She should be thanking me. Napa? Hell, I could hold this wedding on the moon and she’d find a way to crawl there.”
The housekeeper fell silent.
A moment later, Liam muttered in irritation, “Damn it. Ashley hasn’t replied to my text about the charity dinner in five minutes… I need to go check on her.”
By the time he hurried out of the house, I had already melted back into the shadows.
That house belonged to Liam’s family. It had never been my home.
Liam had suggested I move to Dallas from Montana for convenience while we planned the wedding. At first, things were as sweet as they are for any other engaged couple. Then, four months ago, Ashley returned from her “healing” trip through Europe.
Instantly, his entire world tilted on its axis, centering on her.
If Ashley called, saying she needed an escort to expand her social circle, he would drop the guest list we were working on without a second thought.
The venue, the wedding dress, the reception—the planning became a one-woman show, starring me.
Whenever I tried to object, he’d glance up from texting Ashley and cut me off with a frown. “Chloe, be grateful. Ashley’s lending you her taste so you can fit in with our friends.”
He took my compromises for granted, mistaking my flexibility for desperation.
But he seemed to have forgotten that he was the one who had proposed to me.
He had also forgotten that I only said yes because I loved him.
In that moment, I was demoted from bride-to-be to a lonely spectator at the Ashley and Liam show.
And now, even the most important day of my life had become just another tool to placate his sister.
I watched Liam’s car disappear into the night and never set foot in that house again.
That night, I checked into the Four Seasons in downtown Dallas.
Liam never called. Not once.
