His Roommate Was Better Chapter 01
My boyfriend, Dominic Barrett, promised to take me to Fajardo, Puerto Rico, to see the bioluminescent bay for our seventh anniversary.
But on the very eve of our trip, he called and said we had to cancel the flights.
"Davina's being harassed by her ex, and she's on the verge of a breakdown. I need to be there for her."
Davina Reese was his younger schoolmate, the girl he always talked about with a sigh and a soft, helpless, "She's just so pitiful."
It was the third time he had chosen Davina over our important commitment.
This time, I didn't lose control the way I had the first two times. Instead, I said calmly, "Dominic, let's break up."
An impatient laugh came through the line, mixed with loud chatter and singing in the background. He was in a club.
"Aveline, cut it out, okay? This is serious—that man might hurt Davina. Can't you be a little more understanding?
"Do as I say—refund the tickets. I'll make it up to you. I'll take you somewhere even more romantic, I promise."
I didn't refund them.
The next day, I dragged my suitcase behind me and boarded the plane to Puerto Rico alone.
He didn't know that I had made up my mind to leave him.
I no longer needed him by my side to see that legendary bioluminescent bay, dazzling like a river of stars.
Someone else would be there with me for this beautiful, romantic view.

Dominic's call came while I was stuffing the last thing into my suitcase, an ombré blue long dress.
The weather forecast and tide charts both said the next few days would be the best time to see the bioluminescence in Fajardo.
As an art student from a landlocked city, I had always hoped to see that glowing sea and had painted it many times.
When Dominic found out, he tapped my nose in a doting manner and said, "On our seventh anniversary, I'll take you there.
"They say that couples who see the bioluminescence together will be in love forever, just like the glowing sea." The smile in his eyes back then had been brighter than starlight.
So we booked our flights and a premium oceanfront guesthouse three months in advance.
I combed through every travel guide I could find and put together a detailed itinerary, down to the exact rocks that would make the best photo spots and the right times to be there.
To take the prettiest pictures, I bought a new camera lens and packed white dresses in every style, along with straw hats, beach sandals, and everything else I might need. I even practiced in front of the mirror countless times, rehearsing the perfect way to run along the shore and glance back over my shoulder.
Even my roommates picked up on how excited I was. One of them teased me, asking, "Ave, you're not going to be too excited to sleep tonight, are you?"
With a smile, I was about to answer when my phone rang, and Dominic's name flashed across the screen.
Eagerly, I started telling him everything I had done. "I rented a car, and I got in touch with a local guide. He said he can definitely take us to the best viewing spot—"
He cut me off and said coldly, "Ave, refund the tickets. We can't go to Fajardo tomorrow."
My heart dropped so hard it felt like it had been thrown into a freezer, and even my voice shook a little. "Why?"
"Davina's been harassed by her ex—the one with serious character flaws. He even sent her threatening texts. She's locked herself in her dorm room all alone, and she's shaking with fear. I need to go check on her."
Instinctively, I replied, "She could call the police or go to the resident advisor."
"What's the point of calling the police? He hasn't actually hurt her, so at most they'd give him a warning. She's a girl, and she's so timid. What if he retaliates?"
The snap of a lighter echoed—he seemed to have lit a cigarette, and when he spoke again, his voice was a little blurred. "Ave, you're so kind. Of course, you understand, right?
"Besides, it's about doing the right thing. You should be proud of me."
I looked at myself in the mirror, wearing a straw hat, my face still bright with anticipation, and suddenly it all felt unbearably ironic.
This was already the third time Dominic had broken his word to me because of Davina.
