No Lifetime By Your Side Chapter 01
By the third year of her marriage to Dylan Abbott, Arianne Maxine had become the most pathetic doormat Chicago had ever seen.
Every night, Dylan and Noreen Kepner—the singer he'd met at a nightclub—tangled together in bed inside, while Arianne waited silently outside the door. She even bought the condoms herself and brought them in.
Back when Dylan decided to have Noreen move in, Arianne moved out of the master bedroom without a word. "Nori's got no one to rely on," she said. "You don't have to consider my feelings, Mr. Abbott. Just let her stay here."
When Arianne was two months pregnant, Noreen pushed her down the stairs, causing a miscarriage and leaving her unlikely to conceive again. Yet, Dylan brushed it off, saying Noreen hadn't done it on purpose, and Arianne remained nonchalant. "You're right. Nori didn't do it on purpose. I won't hold it against her."
Everyone said her life was miserable, yet she just smiled.
One day, while Arianne was busy in the kitchen, a voice she hadn't heard in years suddenly echoed in her mind. She got so excited that she knocked over a nearby plate. "Can I go back now?" she asked.
Martha Gough, the housekeeper, was startled. Noreen let out a mocking laugh and said, "Are you out of your mind, Mrs. Abbott? What kind of nonsense is that? Aren't you home already?"
However, Dylan understood what she meant.
He once loved Arianne with all his heart. He turned down the three wealthy heiresses his grandfather arranged for him and endured ninety-nine lashes on his back just to marry her—a woman of unknown background. He gifted her the emerald necklace that had been in his family for generations, swearing that she alone would ever be his wife in this lifetime.
During the first two years of their marriage, he cherished Arianne dearly. Anything she looked at twice would appear in their home the very next day. He'd buy her all the properties she liked. So she finally confessed that she was from another world and had chosen to stay here forever.
She never expected that her honesty would lead only to his betrayal.
That night, Dylan didn't come home until midnight. He pulled the seductive Noreen in front of her. "Ari, meet the woman who saved me at the docks back then! She has no one to rely on, and I want to repay her kindness. Do you mind if I let her stay in one of my properties so I can visit her often? Don't worry—I just want to check on her; I won't cross any lines."
Arianne nodded gently. "Of course not."
But he spent every single day at that apartment. He bought Noreen handbags, clothes, all kinds of expensive jewelry, and took her around Chicago. He even forgot their wedding anniversary, returning drunk in the early morning and mumbling, "I'm sorry, Ari. I'll remember our anniversary next year."
Arianne nodded. "Okay, I don't blame you."
Then she saw Dylan pressing Noreen against the couch in his study, kissing her passionately, and her heart shattered.
After a tense silence, Dylan straightened his clothes. "Ari, since you've chosen to stay, you should have expected this—men like me and others in our world all have our little flings. I've stayed faithful to you for so many years. Now, I just want to be like other men. Besides, Nori's the only woman I'm involved with."
Arianne finally understood that his love for her had long since faded. He knew she was gentle and easygoing, so he began testing the waters. Once he was sure she couldn't leave and that she had no one but him to rely on and nowhere else to go, he finally revealed his true colors and brazenly cheated on her.
Arianne snapped out of her thoughts. Dylan wrapped his arm around Noreen affectionately and handed her a bracelet. Then, he looked at Arianne and sneered. "Ari, you really need to adjust to how life is now. Stop dreaming the impossible. You want to go home, right? Who's coming to take you back? You might as well give up and try to get along with Noreen. Alright, that's enough. You told me going back would be pure torture. Are you really brave enough to face that?"
Arianne watched Noreen play with the bracelet. She had personally strung all those beads together, her fingers rubbed raw in the process. And he had given it to Noreen, as though it were worthless.
She kept quiet, not bothering to explain her earlier remark. Then she went back to her room and urgently called out to the divine being who had brought her into this world.
"Dear lord, what must I do to return home?"
The voice in her head was silent for a moment before speaking. "You might find it brutal. Consume the pill I give you for seven days, and you'll die from the poison."
Without hesitation, Arianne said, "I'll do it!"
With that, a black pill appeared in her hand. She put it straight into her mouth, chewing as she murmured, "It's here. I can finally go home."
Just as she finished speaking, the door was kicked open. Dylan walked in, his face grim. "Who were you talking to?!"
