His Second Choice My Final Goodbye Chapter 01
I packed my toiletries into a bag while Arthur still stood at the study door, his expression complicated.
"What exactly do you want?"
I walked toward the study holding the bag. "I just want to sleep in a different room. Good night."
The door clicked shut, shutting out his hesitant expression.
Lying on the cot, I felt a sense of relief I had never experienced before.
This was our fourth anniversary together, and also the fourth time he had broken a promise.
The first year, he said the company had to rush the year-end report; I waited at home until two in the morning, the fireworks finished, and the pasta went cold.
The second year, he said Rosalie was hospitalized with acute appendicitis and needed someone to sign the papers. I went to eat Fondue alone, ended up with a stomachache from the spice, and curled up on the sofa all night.
The third year, he said something happened in Rosalie's family, she was in a bad mood and needed company.
This year, he said Rosalie had an emergency.
Every single time, it was Rosalie.
I closed my eyes, and a voice in my heart spoke with absolute clarity: Enough, it's really enough.
The next morning, I woke up very early.
I didn't toast bread like I usually did, but instead went straight out the door to work.
Not long after, my phone buzzed; it was a message from Arthur: "Why didn't you wake me up?"
I took one look, put the phone down, and didn't reply.
