He Broke My Hands I Broke His Soul Chapter 01
Everyone in San Francisco knew that Marina Raynford and Jayvon Langston were always at each other's throats.
As his fiancée, she laid down three hard rules—no street racing, no staying out all night, and absolutely zero contact with his unforgettable love, Evelin Patten.
Jayvon deliberately did the opposite of everything she wanted.
He tore up the city's mountain roads in his sports car, drank himself into oblivion at exclusive clubs until dawn, and—just to spite Marina on her birthday—kissed Evelin right in the middle of a fireworks show.
Everyone braced for the explosion.
They figured that, with Marina's fiery temperament as the city's top socialite, she'd storm over the moment she saw the viral kissing photo and drag that playboy home.
An hour later, Marina walked into the private room.
But she didn't cause a scene or try to force Jayvon out the door. Instead, she walked right up to him, eerily calm, and held out her hand. "Jayvon, seven years ago, I gave you an amulet. Can I have it back now?"
Jayvon froze. His hand shot up instinctively, fingers brushing the pendant resting against his chest.
Seven years ago, a bad street racing wreck put him in the ICU for twenty-four hours. Marina was the first person he saw when he finally came to.
Her eyes were red and swollen from crying, and she had visibly lost weight. The second his eyes fluttered open, the tears started all over again. She unhooked the amulet from her own neck and clumsily fastened it around his.
"My grandmother gave this to me, and I've never been hurt while wearing it," she'd told him, her voice raw but fierce. "I'm giving it to you now. You need to keep it on, Jayvon. No more getting hurt."
Given how much he resented her, he should have ripped the amulet off and thrown it right back at her. But that day, he didn't—he just scoffed. "So controlling. Am I never allowed to take it off?"
She was quiet for a long time before answering, her voice barely a whisper. "You can take it off the day I stop loving you. Because on that day, I'll come and ask for it back."
The memory kicked up a sudden, twisting knot in Jayvon's chest, but he ignored it. Leaning back against the sofa, he gave a careless smirk. "Why do you want it back?"
"No reason," Marina said, her tone flat. "I just don't want you to have it anymore."
Her sudden change sent a sharp wave of irritation through him as he stared at her familiar face.
Growing up, she was the picture of a well-bred woman—elegant, gentle, and eternally composed. It bored him to tears.
As Jayvon remembered how she'd spent years trying to win his heart, always meddling in his life, it suddenly clicked for him.
"I see," he drawled, his gaze heavy with sarcasm. "You finally realized that clinging to me won't make me fall for you, so now you're playing hard to get?"
Marina didn't say a word.
Taking her silence as all the proof he needed, Jayvon kept pushing. "Fine. I'll play along with your little game. You can have the amulet back. Just finish the mangoes on this table, and I'll hand it over."
A collective gasp rippled through the room.
Unable to stay quiet, Evelin tugged at Jayvon's sleeve. "Jay, isn't that a little cruel?" she whispered. "Ms. Raynford is... allergic to mangoes."
Jayvon didn't even look at her. His eyes stayed locked on Marina. "She's free to walk away if she thinks it's cruel. No one's twisting her arm here."
As soon as he finished, Marina sat down at the table.
She picked up a slice of mango, put it in her mouth, chewed, and swallowed.
After the first bite, her lips started turning an angry red.
After the second, a rash flared up across her cheeks.
By the third bite, her breathing had grown shallow and rapid, and broad, angry red welts began spreading down her neck.
The private room was dead silent.
Jayvon just stared. He watched her skin flush a violent red, her breathing growing ragged and shallow. Still, she didn't stop eating.
She didn't look up until the plate was completely empty.
Her eyes were swollen to slits, her lips turning a bruised, mottled purple. When she finally spoke, every word took immense effort, her voice cracking. "I... finished it. Can I... have it now?"
Jayvon's temper snapped. He kicked the table over, sending glass shattering across the floor.
"Take it!" He ripped the amulet from his neck and hurled it at her. "Get out!"
Then he grabbed Evelin's hand and stormed toward the door without a backward glance.
Just as they reached the exit, a heavy thud echoed behind them.
Evelin glanced over her shoulder and gasped. "Jay! Ms. Raynford... She collapsed. The allergic reaction is really bad. Is she dying? Should we take her to the hospital?"
Jayvon stopped, instinctively looking back. Marina lay curled on the floor, convulsing. The hives on her face had merged into angry, solid red patches, and her breaths came in loud, harsh wheezes.
A sharp spike of panic hit him. He took a step toward her, but Evelin suddenly stumbled, twisting her ankle and falling heavily against his chest.
His focus instantly snapped back to supporting Evelin, his brow furrowed. "How did you hurt your ankle? Does it hurt?"
Evelin leaned against him, looking pitiful. "I'm okay... I can manage the pain. You should check on Ms. Raynford. She looks miserable..."
Jayvon shot Marina a look of absolute disgust. An inexplicable wave of irritation washed over him, hardening his voice. "Leave her. She chose to eat it. If she dies, she brought it on herself, and I'll finally get some peace. Let's get your ankle checked out at the hospital first."
With that, he scooped Evelin into his arms and walked out.
Sprawled on the floor, Marina summoned the last of her strength to pull her phone from her pocket and dial 911.
"I'm in... room 308... on the third floor of... the Eclipse Club..." Her broken voice was barely a whisper. "Allergic reaction... I need an ambulance..."
She dropped the phone and rested her cheek against the cold floor, feeling the darkness start to pull her under.
"Don't worry, Jayvon," she murmured weakly to the empty room. "Soon... you'll have your peace."
Closing her eyes, she thought to herself, "You don't know yet. The test results showed I'm not my parents' biological daughter.
"Their real daughter is coming home soon.
"And I'll be leaving this place."
