The Perfect Wife's Exit Chapter 01
By the third year of Elijah Dempsey's affair, Olivia Lachlan had finally become the wife he had always wanted.
She no longer rushed to hotels late at night to catch him in the act, nor did she frantically demand to know where he had spent his nights. She also stopped being hysterical or hurting herself to make him stay.
She became like the most inconspicuous ornament in the house—silent, unobtrusive, never a hint of fuss.
One day, she received an urgent call from the hospital.
"Is this Elijah Dempsey's wife? He was in a serious car accident and needs emergency surgery. We need a family member to sign the consent forms."
Olivia gripped her phone, eyes glued to the local news on the television.
"A serious multi-car collision occurred today on the Pacific Coast Highway, involving Elijah Dempsey, CEO of the Dempsey Group. Eyewitnesses report that at the moment of impact, Dempsey shielded his female companion, Sofia Gonzalez, with his own body. The act left him with severe injuries, while Gonzalez sustained only minor injuries. This highlights the CEO's apparent devotion to Gonzalez, raising questions about the future of his marriage to Mrs. Dempsey..."
The camera swept over the wreckage and the blurry yet familiar figure on a stretcher in the distance.
Olivia watched calmly, her eyes devoid of the slightest emotion.
Then, she spoke softly into the phone. "You've got the wrong number."
She ended the call and switched off the TV.
A week later, Elijah returned home.
Even with gauze on his brow and a pale face, he was still undeniably handsome, his flamboyant, rebellious charm undiminished.
When he walked in, Olivia was curled up on the couch reading a novel, a cup of warm milk beside her.
Seeing how peaceful and comfortable she looked, and recalling how he had suffered sleepless nights in pain at the hospital without even a single call from her, Elijah felt a surge of anger rising in his chest.
"Olivia!" He strode forward, his voice low and hoarse from the suppressed anger. "Didn't you know I was in a car accident?!"
Olivia turned a page without even looking up. "I did."
"You did?" Taken aback by her indifferent attitude, Elijah stared at her in disbelief. "You knew, yet you refused to sign the consent forms? You didn't come take care of me. You didn't visit me even once! I'm your husband, Olivia!"
Olivia finally looked up at him, her gaze calm, even slightly puzzled.
"Didn't you say I shouldn't call myself your wife in public or appear in front of you? Otherwise, your beloved Sofia would be upset. I followed your instructions, so how is it my fault?"
She paused, then continued, her tone as serious as if she were discussing work, "Why don't you make a list? I'll follow it so I don't keep upsetting you."
Elijah's throat tightened suddenly, as if something was stuck there.
As he looked at Olivia, who frowned as if considering how to improve things, his anger drained away, replaced by a chilling emptiness and a strange, rising dread.
"Olivia, you..." His voice sounded strained. "How did you become like this?!"
Olivia frowned, even more confused. "What do you mean? I stopped checking up on you, and I stopped making trouble. When you bring Sofia home, I move to the guest room without being asked. When you get her a bag, I help you pick the right one. I've done everything you asked, Elijah. What else do you want from me?"
Once again, Elijah was speechless.
She'd become the perfect wife he'd always wanted—quiet, compliant, and allowing him the freedom to love anyone he wished.
But why did he feel so empty inside?
Just then, his phone rang.
The name "Sofi" flashed on the screen, along with a selfie of her pouting.
He instinctively looked at Olivia, but she had already lowered her gaze to her book, as if she hadn't heard anything.
He hesitated for a moment, then answered the call.
"Eli!" Sofia Gonzalez's sweet, soft voice came through the phone. "I've finished my thesis, so I can finally spend time with you. I bought that outfit you said you wanted to see me in—black, with lace. I'll be waiting for you at home!"
Her suggestive tone was unmistakable. Elijah's heart raced, and he couldn't help glancing at Olivia again.
But her face was devoid of emotion—no anger, no embarrassment, not even the slightest hint of displeasure.
Instead, she stood up, opened a drawer, took out a few unopened boxes of condoms, and stuffed them into Elijah's hands.
"You should go. Oh, and these are leftovers from before. It'd be a waste to leave them here. Take them and use them with Ms. Gonzalez."
She thought for a moment, then added, her tone almost considerate, "Of course, you don't have to use them. It'll be great if Ms. Gonzalez gives you a child."
A loud buzz rang in Elijah's mind.
Shock, confusion, and the sheer ridicule of the situation hit him all at once, punctuated by a sharp pain.
Olivia had just handed him a few boxes of condoms, telling him to use them with another woman? She had even wished for that woman to bear his child?!
Sofia urged from the other end, "Eli? Why aren't you saying anything?"
Elijah snapped back to his senses and hastily hung up.
He gripped the boxes tightly, his knuckles turning white as his chest heaved violently.
"I get it now." He spoke with sudden conviction, as though he'd finally found a reason for her change, his voice tinged with mockery. "Olivia, you're doing this just to win me back, aren't you? I've told you before—I love Sofia more now! Whatever tricks you're pulling, they won't change a thing!"
Olivia looked up at him, her eyes heavy with a tired helplessness, as though she were dealing with a stubborn child who was completely beyond reason.
She sighed softly. "Elijah, believe whatever you like.
"Anyway, you should go. Don't keep Sofia waiting. I'm doing well here. There's really no need for you to rush back."
Under Elijah's stunned gaze, she reached out and gently pushed him out the door!
"Olivia! You—"
The door shut in his face.
Elijah stood outside, clutching the boxes of condoms, his chest filled with unprecedented anger and hollow panic.
Did she just kick him out so he could be with Sofia?
"I told you, Olivia—playing hard to get won't work!"
He growled at the door, then kicked the wall before leaving with a dark expression.
Inside, Olivia leaned against the cold door, standing silently for a while.
Only after hearing the car start and drive away did she slowly return to the living room.
Then, she picked up her phone and called her lawyer, Patrick Marley.
"Mr. Marley, it's me, Olivia. How's the divorce coming along? When will the papers be finalized?"
