I Erased Myself From His World Chapter 01
Today was my fifth anniversary with Marco Bereford. At the party, one of his friends smirked and asked him in French, "So, what's it like having sex with your secretary?"
Marco thoughtfully handed me a slice of cantaloupe—my absolute favorite—before casually replying in the same language.
"Fantastic. She's so young and fresh. Just make sure Ellie never finds out. If she does, she'll leave me."
The others immediately burst into laughter, swearing up and down that their lips were sealed.
I stood right there beside them, gripping my wineglass so tightly that my knuckles were white.
They had no idea I understood French—or that I'd known for a long time that Marco was keeping a mistress.
I hadn't confronted him or caused a scene. Instead, I had quietly applied to work at a confidential national research facility with restricted access.
In three days, I would do what he feared most—I would leave him for good.

When I didn't touch my cantaloupe, Marco looked at me with concern and asked in English, "Babe, what's wrong?"
His laser-focused attention felt entirely hypocritical. He had just finished talking about his mistress, and almost instantly, he slipped into a flawless performance as the doting husband.
I wondered how much further he'd stretch this lie. "Nothing," I replied. "What were you guys just talking about?"
Marco playfully pinched my cheek, smiling with affection. "International business. I know how much you hate hearing about work, so we kept it in French."
He was probably too wrapped up in his new affair to forget that I had spent time in France as an exchange student in college.
I brushed his hand away. "Carry on, then. I'm going for a walk."
As I walked away, I caught snippets of hushed conversation from the other guests.
"That's Mrs. Bereford. She has a perfect life. Her wedding was all over the news, and her husband throws a massive party for their anniversary every single year. She's truly the luckiest woman on earth."
"I know, right? Why can't I find a man that perfect?"
Hearing people envy Marco and me used to fill me with joy. But now, I felt absolutely nothing.
No one knew that Marco—the man everyone praised for loving me so deeply—was cheating on me.
Yesterday, I went to his office unannounced, planning to surprise him early with his anniversary gift.
I hid in his storage closet to wait and was actually starting to doze off when the sound of heavy breathing startled me awake.
I opened my eyes to see Marco—the man who had sworn to love only me—pressing his assistant, Camilla Elliston, up against the floor-to-ceiling windows. Their naked bodies left streaks of sweat across the pristine glass.
They had sex in that office for three hours before finally getting dressed and leaving.
Those three hours felt like an eternity, each second a torment. The initial wave of despair and heartbreak gradually gave way to a hollow numbness.
The second I walked out of the building, I knew my marriage to Marco was over.
The ring of my phone pulled me out of my memories.
"Ellie, I submitted your name to the research institute. They'll send a car to pick you up in three days. Use this time to say goodbye to your family."
Marco had been my only family since the accident that killed my parents four years ago. But after what he did, he didn't count anymore.
"That won't be necessary, Prof. Holden," I said. "Please ask the board to wipe all my personal records."
My mentor, Maribel Holden, sounded shocked. "Why? Once your records are wiped, Eliza Dawson will cease to exist. I thought you and Marco were happy. What's he going to do when he can't find you?"
I let out a bitter laugh. "He cheated on me."
The line went dead silent before Maribel finally sighed. "All right. I'll wipe the records. Just use these three days to tie up your loose ends."
"Thank you, Prof. Holden," I said. Just then, Marco's voice rang out behind me. "Who cheated?"
