The Flight Out Of His Lies Chapter 01

I bit the bullet and bought the last box of discounted shrimp.
Right next to me, a young girl dressed head to toe in designer brands was picking out imported seafood.
Sameera Braugher glanced at me and dropped a king crab into my shopping cart.
"It's Christmas. You deserve something nice," she said with a careless smile. "I'll pay for your groceries today."
My eyes widened at the price tag as I waved my hands frantically in refusal.
She pulled out a black card, utterly unfazed. "It's fine. My sugar daddy gives me way too much credit. He'll be upset if I don't spend it all."
I forced an awkward laugh. "How generous of him."
"He's alright. I just can't spend money as fast as he makes it.
"But honestly, his girlfriend is so stupid. She's been working nonstop for years just to help him pay off a debt that doesn't even exist.
"I told him to cook me a meal for Christmas Eve, and he immediately ditched his girlfriend to be with me."
I froze for a moment.
My boyfriend, Nicholas Clarke, was also in debt.
Just as I was telling myself it was just a coincidence, my phone buzzed.
Nicholas sent me two texts.
"Annie, I've been scheduled for a last-minute shift. It's triple the pay."
"Treat yourself to something delicious and wait for me to come home tomorrow, okay?"

A sharp ringing filled my ears. My vision spun, and everything was a blur.
When I hadn't replied, Nicholas called.
His voice was patient and gentle. "Annie, why aren't you saying anything?"
Hearing his affectionate tone, I asked, "Can you come back tonight? Let's forget about the money, okay?"
He paused for a moment, then chuckled softly. "Can't bear to be apart from me? Once we pay off the debt, we can be together every single day."
Someone called for him to get back to work, and he hung up in a hurry.
I stared blankly at the 20 dollars he sent over, while Sameera sighed helplessly. "My sugar daddy just gave me 200,000 dollars for some sexy lingerie.
"But even the most expensive ones are only around 15,000 dollars. Here, let me buy you a few outfits with the rest."
Sameera didn't give me a chance to refuse. She dragged me to the checkout, then straight into a luxury boutique.
As I stared at the string of numbers on the price tags, a bitter laugh escaped my lips.
After graduation, Nicholas' business went under. He was ultimately left with millions in debt and suffered from severe depression.
I juggled multiple jobs, hoping he'd regain the spark in his eyes.
For five whole years, I scrimped and saved, surviving on plain bread and water more times than I could count.
But now, the clothes I was wearing cost over 30,000 dollars each.
Thinking about it, all I felt was a stinging bitterness in my chest.
Sameera kept chatting away beside me. "Do you know my man forced his girlfriend to get three abortions for my sake?"
Something exploded in my head, and my hand instinctively moved to my stomach.
I had been through three miscarriages as well.
The first time, I pushed the throttle on my motorcycle desperately to avoid being late on a delivery, only to be knocked down by a luxury car.
The second time, I knelt for two hours in the heavy rain just to earn 10 dollars from a funeral gig.
The third time, Nicholas cried and said we couldn't afford our child's future, and took me to a small clinic to get an abortion.
I didn't know how many nights he woke up from nightmares, holding me and whispering apologies.
He said, "Annie, when I make a comeback, I'll give you the steady life you deserve."
Sameera didn't notice my face turning pale and continued, "Back then, that stupid woman was so scared when she realized she'd hit a luxury car, she couldn't even speak.
"In fact, my sugar daddy was sitting in the back seat while we were on a video call.
"That funeral job could've paid a hundred, but my man haggled it down to 10 dollars instead."
Seeing how pleased she looked, I asked, "Don't you mind that he has a girlfriend?"
Sameera looked at me like I was some kind of alien. "His love, his money, even his nightly duties—they're all mine.
"Other than being his girlfriend, what does she even have?"
